Ok I wanted to wait until I finished the movie before posting but I have to say within the first half hour and there has been a lot of... MCU style quips. I'm not really into star wars so not sure if it has always been quick quippy like that but I was just surprised because the whole scifi alien spaceship thing doesn't have much of a tone for mcu humor.

Not saying that's a bad or good thing. Just something I noticed within the first half hour.

I didnt hate it, but my biggest issue with it was that some things felt very Disney-ified and it just made the movie feel a bit weaker for me. It didnt have the weight of a Star Wars film.

That said, there was plenty to enjoy in it, and Ill certainly be picking up a copy when it releases on disc. But it definitely isnt my favorite Star Wars film.

Youre probably right about some people being biased. My complaint is that the Casino scenes really hurt the pacing and tone of the movie. They stood out and was long overall. Some other fans were really, really bothered by Lukes portrayal and how pretty much all of it was uncharacteristic of him, but I accepted it and wasnt too bothered. It was an OK movie that Im glad I saw at a discount.

It has a lot of plot issues that become more glaring the more you think about them.

It has a specific subplot that people really hated.

Also people didn't like what they did with certain characters.

Also it had a lady with pink hair.

The Casino subplot was more forced than anything; they had a good opportunity to keep the plot contained to the chase, but someone had to point out 'hey, this is Star Wars, and there's a minimum quota of alien planets that have to be visited per movie.' And while I didn't necessarily mind Rose for the most part, her saving Finn at the last second was a groan-inducing cop out. And of course there's flying Leia >_>

Beyond that, I enjoyed it, moreso than VII at least. Went in with fairly low expectations and was overall pleased with the results. Really dug lightspeed kamikaze.
Luke's ending was great, though I'm on the fence about him dying (on one hand, the all-powerful elder character has to die / be otherwise incapacitated in order for the young hero to stand on his / her own two feet, but there's a lot of clues that they pulled a fast one on Hamill). I actually loved that Snoke went out like a chump, because I was not looking forward to an entire trilogy of Diet Coke Palpatine / Darth Tilda Swinton being the supreme big bad puppet master.

Not to the same degree nor in the same context. Not sure why you pretend not to know this.

Han's 'we're fine...how are you?' ruined the tension of the jailbreak sequence. And did Leia really need to belittle Luke's manlet status, robbing the scene of gravitas when it should have otherwise been an epic rescue? Buncha quippy Marvel trash in Episode IV.

At least the quips weren't there in A New Hope because people in 20th Century Fox's marketing department saw how they were a hit with audiences in other movie franchises. And there wasn't a "yo mama" joke in ANH.

my main complaints were:
-The casino planet is a complete waste of time

-The flying Leia scene

-Rey's training is barely anything. Luke's training in Empire was a big deal, but here it feels like she gets like two 10 minute lessons and that's it lol

-Luke's character is awful in this movie and goes against everything he built up to in the OT. We waited 30 years for the return of Luke Skywalker in theaters and THIS is what we get!?

I think the scene with Kylo and Rey teaming up is one of the best in the entire series but outside that the rest of the movie is very meh. The plot focuses on people trying to make things better but making them worse and failing a lot which can be frustrating to watch.

Rose is also the worst character introduced into the series and it makes me not want to rewatch the movie because of her and makes me upset she'll probably be in the next one.

The main problem I have with the new trilogy is that I just don't really care much about what's happening outside of the Rey and Kylo stuff.

As for Snoke, I think his death was both really well done and also disappointing. I was curious to see what he was all about, but it turns out it was never going to be important. The fight scene against the Royal guards is definitely the best part of the new trilogy so far.

I love how people try to deflect with "guys the OT had humor too!"

Yeah, but the difference is that it actually felt natural there and not forced in because a bunch of focus groups responded positively to it.

Oh wow that was pretty bad. Yeah that was pretty bad. I didn't like the movie at all.

I was sure I was going to like it since audience reaction was so negative, but now I realize it was negative for a reason. I weirdly like rogue one more than this, but then again I love Donnie Yen and his presence in that movie was badass and awesome.

I'm not really a Star Wars fan, but I've seen all the films. I thought the film was okay, but why the decision to start another war? When did Luke become so friggin powerful? Snoke was pretty lame. Ben and Rey team up was cool, but then was let down immediately after when they both decided to choose sides. The Finn and Rose stuff was unneccessary. Holdo's hyperspeed destruction scene was fucking cool though.

But yeah that was just not entertaining. I don't think I like any of the characters for several reasons.

Let's start with what I assume to be our protagonist, Rey. It's hard to criticize the character when so many accuse criticizers of being anti female which is rather bizarre for obvious reasons. Say what you will about the mary sueness of her in star wars 7, but what particularly bothers me in 8 is that all her skill and talent with the weapons and force doesn't feel earned. There's no catharsis of a training montage which I personally don't consider to be a cliche but rather a trope, and tropes are tools that movies use, and are necessary, and can be done well. But without that feeling of accomplishment from training and hard work, well... it actually belittles the character more because to be so perfect at everything does not a compelling character make.

I don't really care about any of the fleet. Also is it just me or is the whole casino scenes and subplot of Finn and Rose completely pointless? Whether they went or not had no impact on the final outcome of the movie so it's like... holy crap movie you wasted our time for no reason.

Kylo Ren is just a weird character. Intentional or not, it still sounds like a little kid cosplaying as the bad guy in a movie and trying to make his voice sound deeper.

By extension, the stupid named snoke guy is also... like who the hell are these guys? Any of them? Audiences are so much more sophisticated now, you can't just introduce these lame looking villains and just expect us to accept them when we don't even know their motivations. Galaxy conquest? Dark side shenanigans?

It felt like the rey and kylo team up with the red queen (from alice in wonderland) soldiers was supposed to be the cool scene of the movie but I wasn't feeling it at all.

At this point I don't even know what to say about Luke. They brought him back just so he can say I hid away because? The reason they gave is kinda stupid. This entire movie has this kind of surreal dreamlike state to it where you just are supposed to accept things and characters doing weird shit just because, which perhaps could be said about most of the franchise as a whole but yeah.

I dunno, I just didn't like it. Quite frankly a lot of the movie feels like nonsense. Not fun nonsense, fanfiction nonsense.

The lady who takes over gives absolutely no good reason why she kept their plan a secret which would only beg for a mutiny. But of course it had to be done to give Fin SOMETHING to do in this movie. Fin could have had every scene he was in removed and the overall plot would not have changed. The entirity of the casino planet could have been removed. The entirity of Fin and Rose on the first order ship fighting phasma could have been removed. Literally half the film was a bunch of nothingness.

The movie hinted at the force not being black and white anymore and Kylo even talks about throwing it all away and then only a second later he talks about being the new emperor thus going back to the black and white.

The summary of the movie is the same as ESB. Just like the summary of TFA is like the original.
Main hero goes to remote island to train with a jedi master while their friends are barely escaping the evil empire that is chasing them through space only for the climax to occur on a planet that the friends being chased find refuge in at the end of the movie and then they escape form there too when the evil bad guys overrun the place.

What did you think about Rose "saving" Finn? That was the worst part in the whole movie.

Rose: We won't win this war by sacrificing ourselves.

-Holdo literally sacrificed herself and took out the entire enemy fleet
-The doom laser is literally breaking down the door and if Finn had hit it he would have stopped it
-Thank god there was a back exit to the base or Rose would have effectively doomed everyone

I'm certainly not a big fan of this movie, but pretty sure that's not what was said. That part was more we'll win by saving what we love, not destroying what we hate. I think there's a decent enough difference between how Holdo was taking the fight to the enemy versus how Finn was doing it.

Still don't like that scene/Rose in general though
