Story time.

Back on black friday, I announced that LG was selling the best HDTV on the market at a greatly reduced price--the OLED65B7A was going for 2300.

as i am a cheap person, that wasn't quite good enough for me.

my wife's discovercard has a unique price protection policy, one that BEGS for (legal) abuse. they allow for price protection claims within 90 days...but accept online ads as evidence. Including from non-authorized sellers.

I used this ad:

http://www.tvsuperstores.com/LG_B7A_Series_OLED65B7A_-_65_OLED_Smart_TV_-_4K_UltraHD_998.html

If you buy directly from this vendor, you dumb.

But discover, after a lengthy investigation, running to the very end of its duration period, ultimately accepted the claim that they had a price $500 (or more) less than the black friday price from an authorized seller.

Discover allows you to submit a price protection claim several times per year. Only once per item, obviously.

This is completely legal. It feels wrong (who am I kidding? no it does not) but my check has been cut and is in the mail.

You're welcome.

Yeah, I got roped in to AMEX cause 0% APR for 18 months... oh maybe 15 months.

APR is almost over so just paid it off and using that metal prime now.

Makes me wonder if AMEX is like, he just paid off a few grand before we could charge... or like, no one even bats an eye on that angle.

Several cards have this benefit and it can't really be abused because they just close your account after x amount or just stay denying everything.

Yeah, true. Thing is that even doing a legitimate amount gets them to flag you. Like for the year, you can probably get away with doing one more of $500 or a couple of smaller ones and then they start denying with bogus explanations.

Great benefit nonetheless. Has saved me thousands over the years.

Glad you got this discount. TV is a steal at that price.

I have a Discover card but haven't used it in ages... largely because I got annoyed at how few places would accept it.

A couple years ago, I bought 3 TVs that retailed at $750 a week before black friday. Then I got $1500 back from the price protection for the Black Friday ad that had them for sale for $200

I use my Discover card on everything though. Usually twice a year I find someone that doesn't accept it,and it's usually a mom and pops place

A lot of places. I've never had an issue when I use my Discover card, then again I don't use it often so maybe I'm just not paying attention to the places I buy stuff and not use it. /shrug

Edit
Also I get to have a card with a boxer dog face on it!!11

any major online retailer will take discover

any major store will take it as well.

its great to use for any large purchases with the 5% cb. amazon gives extra discounts for using discover on certain purchases on top of the 5%.

oh and grocery stores. i use it to purchase groceries as well and double cb with their current promotion.
