not looking forward to farming 1-ups. what's the easiest way to do that in world 1?

Doesn't the first level have an extra life balloon in that cabin room with K.Rool's letter?

If you can do that you can pause and press select to exit the level quickly and then return, and I'm pretty sure you keep everything. You can also play swanky's games for some quick lives, but those might be one and down? I don't remember.

Sonic 3 doesn't have a level select except from your save file after you've beaten the game.

also you can't replay Mario 3 levels on the NES but I'm pretty sure you can in the later ports that let you replay levels

ah, right. i had a memory of horizontally moving a cursor and vertically selecting a character in sonic, that must have been the save files.

i feel less bad now. i just haven't played many of those games (just MM2... and that was just now!)

i beat that lava level! had to keep bumping the seals to turn the water blue. i really rushed through the end of it though, so i missed the G despite having K-O-N - and i wasn't even aware that you could get the swordfish. obviously wrong, since i saw a no animals sign toward the end. :(

kinda bothered, because odds are i won't revisit it.

i just cleared the red-hot ride level. really well-designed level that tripped me up in multiple spots and required some fairly precise jumping - especially needing to springboard off the dragonfly to reach another balloon as your balloon sinks

i also died to the section with three consecutive hot air shafts and three bees. even if i had two lives, after getting injured, i'd be bumped off the balloon. it sucked.

my second K-O-N-G after the very first level!

gotta watch the spurz in OT though

anyway, just beat the boss and immediately backtracked to world 1, stage 1, so i could farm coins and save. kleever was super-fun to fight and i love the way dixie/diddy freak out when they see bosses. also love the ridiculous celebration when you complete a level.

(edit) just dipped my toe into world 3 stage 1. not going any further tonight!

Should just play on the SNES Classic so you can use save states tbqh.

...actually, how are you playing this? On an actual SNES? I think that and the Wii are the only devices that don't have save states...

I'm not doing save states because I want the more AUTHENTIC experience. If I do use them it's more for an "I need to leave" situation. DKC2 can have you lose progress with a game over.

I actually did lose progress with a game over - I'd cleared the first barrel level in World 3, and then died on the underwater level. Just beat it and saved though.

the way I usually do it is just have a save at the beginning of a level and just reload if I die so I don't lose lives

and maybe transfer the save up to a checkpoint if I hit one

I don't think running out of lives is a gimmick that makes a game better

there is something that feels authentic about having to clear multiple levels in one go, so you really have to master the game to beat it

but yeah, DKC2 is a game that really didn't need a lives system, due to how its save system works

Yeah, I don't think of the DKC games in general as particularly difficult overall. They each have a few very frustrating levels that everyone who's played the games knows exactly what level it is if you mention it (such as Animal Antics). I just think DKC2 has more of those levels than DKC1 does because the Lost World levels are designed to be more difficult than the rest of the game.

Super Mario 3D Land is basically a by the numbers Mario game. It's solid, but I honestly don't remember anything about it. I'd probably put it in the 80-90 range.

Super Mario Sunshine is a game I have a lot of conflicted feelings about. It has some really good stuff in there, like Pinna Park, Sirena Beach, and Noki Bay. The FLUDD-less levels in general are some of the best stuff the game has to offer (although Super Mario Galaxy borrowed most of the best ones so that neutered whatever advantage Sunshine might have had!). At the same time, it feels kind of lazy and uninspired. Way too many of the Shines feel the same (and how many times do I have to do the exact same Gooper Blooper fight anyway?), and I always think that they could've used those ridiculous Blue Coin Shines to create three more worlds. Also, Bowser in a Bathtub is the worst final boss in anything ever. I'd probably put this game around 100 or so.

Now on the other end of the "inspired" spectrum is Super Mario Odyssey. That's a good word to describe this game. It's just so much fun and ambitious, although perhaps a little overly ambitious with the sheer amount of Power Moons in this game. I was ready to be done with this game by the time I got the last Power Moon, but I'll definitely come back to Odyssey at some point and do it all again. New Donk City is one of the best worlds in any Mario game. I'd probably rank this one somewhere between 25-35.

beat two more DKC2 levels last night. the grind is real.

one of them involved jumping on a lot of dragonflies with perfect timing - very satisfying. (it also had a bonus stage where you get a spider right after the save point - meaning i could spam it for lives). jumping on alligators and avoiding BEES was involved. the music wasn't super-notable here.

the next one had me transformed INTO a snake instead of riding it, and that was freaking great. i found myself leaning while the snake jumped. i don't think i've leaned while playing a game in a damn long time, unless you count motion-controlled mario kart.
