I don't want the traditional skin-tight, pocketless bike shorts, but I don't want something very baggy either. Seems like if I search for bike shorts it's either one of those two options. I'd like it to be breathable, have some secure pockets, and go down to slightly above the knee. I'm sure what I'm looking for exists but I don't know what it would be called

Damn right I'm tagging you (you're gonna just tell me to get the spandex shorts, aren't you?)

I'm a bit of an outlier but I can cycle comfortably in running pants. Something like this:

https://www.nike.com/au/t/run-division-29-running-trousers-gXTO9o70/912993-010

It's got pockets and provides sun and cold protection.

If you find what you're looking for give me a shout because I'd love a pair too. The only alternative I can find are running shorts, but they usually have some netting which is real bad for cycling.

Or just got the spandex shorts with matching bum bag ;)

Oh hey, thanks for getting back quick. You have that set to your email or something?

Yeah I was thinking something sort of between running shorts and bike shorts (plus pockets) would work. I didn't think about biking in pants since I tend to only do it when it's warm out, and all the pants I own now are too baggy and I'm afraid of getting them caught. Plus most of the cyclists I see around here wear shorts even if it's freezing out, so I didn't know pants was a thing. I'm not hardcore enough for that.

Just a coincidence that I logged on just after I got the notification, ha.

Yeah, I know what you're going through. A lot of mountain biking shorts go well beyond the knee for me to be comfortable but I think shorts in general will ride up anyway if they're on or just below the knee. Good luck anyway.

I do pretty much all of my biking in either jeans or khaki shorts. Sweatpants if I'm on the trainer, since the lack of moving air makes for a whole lot of sweat. I'm not necessarily one to ask about biking shorts.

Chewy, you should still get tight road cycling pants, they make me feel like stupid, sexy Flanders.

Seriously though, most mountain biking shorts will work. They're a bit more expensive, but will include padding. If you're biking for distance (15+ miles a day), they'll be a dream. Otherwise, I'm with Josh here, running shorts are sufficient.

Honestly though, you're better off changing your saddle if you're finding discomfort.

Huh, I don't know if it's lack of padding really. My regular shorts aren't super comfortable, but I mainly don't like wearing them since they get covered in sweat, and my gym shorts are too baggy and things fall out of the pockets. Running shorts seem too short, but I don't know. Maybe I'll try mountain biking shorts.

There are a few brands who are experimenting with commuter shorts. Shimano has released a line of commuting clothing meant to be stylish and comfortable. A bit pricey, but it looks decent. I haven't had a chance to try it. Mavic has some good mountain biking shorts, but they look like they were made to be on a bike. Sombrio's stuff looks interesting.

Usually though, if I'm commuting, I just bike in jeans or casual shorts.

Possible option: Saddle bag. Fits on the back of your seat, and isn't too intrusive. Just enough to fit your phone, wallet and keys.
