Sir Craig Mackey, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said the rise could not be accounted for simply by more victims feeling able to report abuse or better recording practices.

It is not as simple as saying this is increased confidence, he told the London Assemblys police and come committee.

Of course that plays a part, and faith in the process, but there is something going on with sexual offending in London that we dont fully understand.

We see the end of it but we dont understand the causes.

Joanne McCartney, the deputy mayor of London, told the meeting on Wednesday that Sir Craigs statement was the first time a senior officer has come to this committee and accepted that the increase in sexual violence may not just be about an increase in reporting and confidence.

MOPACs figures showed startling rises in several crime types over 2017, which saw 80 people stabbed to death amid concerns about acid attacks and violent robberies in the capital.

Homicide increased by a third to 137 murders, all knife crimes were up more than a quarter to more than 14,500 incidents that saw 2,000 victims under the age of 25 injured.

Personal robbery increased by 40 per cent, theft from the person a third and Islamophobic hate crime by 39 per cent to 1,678 recorded incidents.

I imagine if it was so "obvious", people with actual statistical data would be able to figure this out pretty quickly. it's perhaps the case that this "obvious" variable was accounted for, and was determined not to be the cause. or perhaps they just aren't as brilliant as you and didn't think of it

if this increase is consistent with annual fluctuations there's nothing to discuss

i'm not taking a position but nobody has even tried to analyze the longer-term trend data, they're too eager to jump all over this data point.

It's the liberal mindset. Focusing on widespread crimes committed by minority groups is racist, whereas focusing on very infrequent crimes like police killings or mass shootings committed by white people is noble.

What are you gonna say when the statistics start showing up?

that they would then have an explanation. if they had such evidence, it wouldn't be unclear why it's happening. therefore, it is likely that such statistical evidence does not exist as of now. if you had the evidence, you could definitely help them understand it.

also, do you have evidence that perhaps the migrants aren't the victims of the crimes? or are you letting your biases cloud the fact that this is an equally likely possibility. people who aren't familiar with an area and who have no where to flee would be easy targets, no? also, we see a rise in hate crimes as well, wonder why that is.

What you need to take with you is that sometimes it is fine to do estimates. 20% not being the yearly deviation in rapes in the UK is a good estimate. You are right that to make an actual statement you need the numbers, yes, but come on.

it is never acceptable to use estimates when the actual data is readily available, and i will always speak up when people are content to assume a conclusion in advance of a full evaluation of the data.

and it's especially unacceptable to turn to name-calling when someone demands rigor.
