That's part of why it says on the package you're not actually supposed to use them for that. In spite of the fact that it's about 97% of what people use them for. As for not working, they only work for me when my ears are wet (ie, right after I take a shower), and I sort of scrap the walls of my ear more like a scoop to pull wax out. But if that doesn't work for you, you might be better off with a water pick.
