It's basically a dishonest liberal tactic. They find areas where there was already a problem with violent crime, rename a street after MLK Jr and then claim that the violence is because of people rebelling against his message so they can exaggerate the problem of racism.

There's a Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard not far north of me in Fort Myers

Unless you're going to the courthouse, the police station, or seeking an inexpensive means of suicide, you have no business being on that street. Something awful will happen to you if you hang around long enough.

The first half is. The latter part is just some sort of conspiracy-theory nonsense.

According to this professor, the reason is

*drumroll*

RACISM!

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2014/01/city_streets_named_for_martin_luther_king_jr_struggle_across_us.html

"Map them and you map a nation within a nation, a place where white America seldom goes and black America can be itself," he wrote. "It is a parallel universe with a different center of gravity and distinctive sensibilities. ... There is no other street like it."

But while streets named for King undoubtedly resonate widely in the black community, a University of Tennessee geography professor whose research explores the cultural and political significance of such streets said the compromised condition of streets named for King in St. Louis and other cities deserves broader attention.

"In some ways we racially profile these streets," said Derek Alderman, author of a 2007 study that found a smaller disparity among MLK-named streets and other "main streets" than is popularly portrayed. "We need to move beyond those images and see what concrete lives and realities are living on those streets."

He's not really wrong, though.
Maternalistic racism in the name of pandering and benevolence is far more pernicious than the traditional guys-in-sheets racism.

What does low income have to do with it?

well lower income values across an area generally precedes heavy violence and crime rates

the idea is that as jobs becomes less available, some turn to crime as a means to survive

crime leading to gang activity, and of course gangs have to have territory

and you have to defend your turf

it's a self perpetuating problem in a lot of ways that needs heavy intervention, partially because things were manufactured this way during the Nixon era and beyond. It's actually an immensely complicated issue that involves like 8 or 9 different problems with the whole of USA itself right now, the least of which is the general racism of local government and the US as a whole

the serious answer is actually that MLK streets typically change names when they get closer to more affluent areas of the city for some reason
