Any theories?

So he takes an envelope from his bag and placed it flat on the table, then takes a friend of mine's iphone. Then he opens calculator and hands it to another friend and says to multiply any 4/5 digit number by any other 4/5 digit number.

She types it in and the answer is 94,457,372 or something. The magician opens the envelope and that number is PRINTED inside the envelope.

How? Do they make printers small enough to fit inside the envelope? It's not a duplicate phone - the friend's phone had a very specific dent on it that was there the whole time.

My only theory is that he didn't open the actual calculator but rather some other app where every answer would be that one (and I mean who's going to call him on it, how many people can multiply 5 digits times 5 digits in their head?)

That's probably super wrong and I just suck at math but oh well

One possibility is that it wasnt printed inside the envelope, he had a small gap and just put a white piece of paper behind to where it looked like it was inside the envelope.

Okay, here are some theories.
1. He had a stack of paper containing every permutation and when your friend just finished typing and you were both distracted, he found the right paper and used sleight of hand to make it seem like it was inside the envelope
2. He planted several numbers around the area as a suggestion to your friend so those numbers are likely to be chosen by your friend
3. He hypnotized your friend
4.Your friend really was playing along
5. You're lying and in cahoots with the magician
6. Related to Roba's, he connected the phone remotely to another device that hacks the calculator app

4 and 6 are the most likely explanations. if you're 100% sure it's not 4 then 6 seems really likely. also as someone who has studied a little bit of magic, I can say that 6 sounds exactly like how a lot of tricks work. you basically introduce a premise to the audience and then do something that breaks the rules without them realizing it.

using an app that would spit out a pre-determined number to make it seem like he was predicting her number ahead of time is EXACTLY the kind of set up you'd expect a magic trick to have if you were designing one. and, additionally, this explains why he asked her to use such large numbers. the trick is designed to guarantee that no one could actually multiply those numbers in their own head.

(understanding this basic idea is the best way to see through a lot of different magic tricks. there is always something the magician will be doing which doesn't have a clear explanation, some aspect of the trick. they'll use patter to distract you from it most often. but if you realize what that thing is you just have to figure out how to explain that 'why did the numbers have to be 5 digits?' you can pretty much figure out how the trick was done)

Did he specify the numbers had to use unique digits? Because I'd be an ass and do 10000 x 10000 if he didn't.
