I guess you can also be charged for saying you're going to harm the president...

Welching isn't illegal... Yet.

But saying you're going to harm the president will get the Secret Service to pay you and your family a visit; do you really want that? They have no sense of humor.

What if you say, called someone fat every once in a while and they killed themselves?

Are you responsible for it?

this law isn't simply because you called someone fat once in a while. it's for people who have a serious repeated behavior of malicious bullying of the same person who has made it aware they are suicidal.

ultimately the one person truly responsible for suicide is the person who commits it. but that doesn't mean other people don't significantly contribute to the decision and should escape unscathed from that.

There has to be a line. Getting in trouble for telling someone to do something when you have no authority over them may not be the best precedent to set.

You look EXTREMELY immature when you announce that you're about to ignore someone. No one cares, including the person about to be ignored. Just FYI.

I mean I don't think it is that simple.

Like constantly bullying and harassing somebody to the point where they feel trapped and think that is the only way out, those people deserve punishment. It's not simply words like a side "Lols kill yourself" more like actual, real verbal and possibly physical abuse.

Idk if you have ever been around or witnessed these kind of things but I think you might be a little more understanding if you saw it first hand. Some people simply can't handle those sort of things and people whether they know it or not should have the basic common decency to not do that to other people.

People usually say slippery slope is a bad argument but I could honestly see people eventually making the argument that calling someone fat and them killing themselves after is murder. Actually I'm willing to bet there are already sjws that vocally support that

Again, they were arrested for cyberbullying, which they admitted to and were documented as doing. While they arguably should be charged with more because they definitely and directly contributed to the suicide, they're 12 and are therefore less culpable.

Only adult bullying of the physical and emotional kind could be charged with murder or manslaughter.

Kids around ten to sixteen have the pack mentality where they will gang up on the weakest of kids to put themselves on a higher pedestal.

The threat of prison sentences won't change that. Kids of that age don't have the life experience to see the bigger picture.

Child bullying is instinctive imo and will never stop.

The only way to stop this kind of bullying would be having the kids parents with them at all times to help fight their battles and unfortunately the education system we invented doesn't allow that.

If adults would stop bullying other adults and then taught children that bullying is a very bad thing that harms society as a whole, then bullying could be stopped. But going by some of the "adults" on this forum, that will never happen because they think bullying others is fun and entertaining. It's really sad.

And give the law more chances for refinement, but not long enough that people get complacent to change it.

Also... hover-parenting is messy. It's a lot of cross-micromanagement and maybe some enabling if the child doesn't have issues developing their own sense of self (aka parental-smothering).

You can but the real problem with cyber bullying isn't that one victim, it's all the others as well. Some are strong enough to ignore it or face it head on. Some use the ignore list to avoid perceptives they don't like. Some can't handle that terrible people make fun of them and don't know that bullies are sadder than them.

You can file legal suits all you want. And I would have encouraged this kids family to do so. However, I have a big problem when it comes to setting precedent in criminal matters especially as they pertain to speech.

You think it doesn't happen, but this kind of shit goes down the slippery slope all the time. "Give them an inch and they take a mile" has never been more true when it comes to legal cases. For instance, with these rules, I could pretty easily justify that you had a hand in Sunny's suicide if he were to kill himself.

This kind of shit already has laws that are in place to prevent it. If a person is being chronically harassed, they can file a restraining order. If they're being harassed as a child, they should be going to their parents/school about it and let them handle it.

What if, in a similar case, a kid says he's going to kill himself and you just say, "I don't care" then the kid proceeds to kill himself.

Should you be held responsible?

Also, it kinda sucks that sometimes, these kids go to adults. And sometimes, the adult still doesn't help or care. So, that does't always work...

Also, even without this law, people would try to do the same shit in court.... But, whatever...

Good. Telling someone to kill themselves should be considered murder, especially if the person follows through with it.

I used to play a lot of FPS games. The phrase "kys" (kill yourself) is used a lot during trashtalk. It is trashtalk. Whether or not you think I participated in it is up to you. Assume I have. I have witnessed more serious threats like "I'm going to hunt you down IRL kid" or "You better watch yourself the next time you go out". Using "kys" does not excuse the aggressor from wrongdoing, but grow some skin/stop playing violent multiplayer games/mute the other person - the web is full of empty threats and macho posturing, simply because it's the internet. (A more legitimate reason is simply because one of the greatest strengths of the internet is (non-)anonymity.)

While social media (including texting) is a different context, especially where this new rule can and should be enforced, some platforms that offer more anonymity should be entirely exempt because of the inherent tone in context: i.e. in a YouTube comments section, a non-anonymous user posts some questionable opinion, an anonymous user replies "kys nerd". Are we really going to hold that anonymous troll accountable for his/her actions, or should we do what we should always do with trolls: ignore them?

Or have we just come to a grand conclusion that Sherm has basically trolled the entire thread from post #2 because he equates "drove someone to murder through repeated torment and telling something to kill themselves multiple times like Emperor Palpatine saying 'do it'" to "telling someone to kill themselves on a random, brief encounter"?
