68. Viewtiful Joe (kateee)
5CLMYIi

Viewtiful Joe is basically the video game version of Last Action Hero, a guilty pleasure movie from my childhood. Joe is just an Average Joe who gets sucked into a movie and becomes Viewtiful Joe. I like the art style because it goes for a comic book look combined with action movie stereotypes, and it pulls it off really well. The concept of the game is very cool because Joe's powers involve speeding up and slowing down time, which you have to use not only in combat but also to get past many of the obstacles as you progress through the levels. You absolutely have to learn how to use those abilities well if you want to beat this game because it doesn't take it easy on you. You won't beat it with button mashing and dumb luck, especially against some of these bosses. It can be frustrating, but it's also a really satisfying challenge because you feel like you've earned it when you finally break through. My personal favorite boss from this game is Another Joe. That one was a lot of fun because I enjoy when games force you to fight doppelgangers of yourself.

Viewtiful Joe also has a lot of cheese and charm, as you would expect from a comic book/action movie hybrid. Perhaps the most famous is Joe's catchphrase, "Henshin a-go-go," but I have a great personal fondness for "DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVIDSON IS IN THE HOUSE! HULK DAVIDSON IS BORN TO BE WILD!" Davidson also makes the "What, you think you're some kind Mega Man or something?" line, so yeah, that dude is pretty great. Although perhaps the best one to me is Alastor's, "Come on! Help a brother out!" I still find myself saying that line in appropriate situations from time to time to this day. I never played the sequel or the PS2 version with Dante though. Not sure if those were any good, but the first game is a fun time.

There were also some unique things that were lost since AC1.

The central theme of assassination was really strong. I liked how you gathered information that gave you different clues into how you could approach the "main" target that wasn't just handled by the plot.

Obviously I have more than half the series to go, but even by Revelations I felt more like an action hero who was having swordfights and high speed chases far more often than an invisible force.

Well, the combat was improved to the point that you didn't have to be all that stealthy because Ezio could solo an entire battalion due to the countering system, so there was a lot more leeway not to have to be perfect. But then they also added different types of missions so that you actually had opportunities to use those new skills they kept giving you.

Which is why I have mixed feelings about it. It doesn't support that central theme of stealth.

I'll take it over the implementation of the first game because it was often more frustrating than fun, but MGS this ain't.

I'm terrible at MGS stealth, too

might be why I like MGS3 so much because you can Rambo your way out of getting spotted when it was literally a death sentence in the first two games if you weren't fast enough to find a hiding spot

Man, I felt it was way harder to deal with alerts in MGS3 than the previous games. That was one of the things I didn't like about it!

Funny story: I rented VJ when it came out, loved it, and then bought it...and got to level 7 and gave up. By then I didn't like the game much at all.

I mean you guys just suck.

I only agree with MGS2 being the hardest on you for being caught because the cooldown seemed to be the slowest, so it was pretty boring to just wait there for 5 minutes each time. Not that I get caught that often though. I should probably try a non tranq run.

The cooldown in MGS3 takes forever, but it also doesn't have endless reinforcements like MGS2 does, so you can theoretically just get rid of the alert by killing or KOing everyone. Plus, you can make the enemy weaker by destroying their weapon and food supplies.

All the different ways that MGS3 gives you to deal with enemies is one of the most fun things about it.

67. Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (Axl_Rose_85)
ECS1f06

Thankfully, during the dark period after Apollo Justice when the future of the series remained uncertain before Dual Destinies was announced, we were not bereft of Ace Attorney entirely. We were given a couple of spinoff games starring Miles Edgeworth to tide us over. They were self-contained and had no real impact on the main canon of the series since they were set in that window of time after the third game but before any of the events of the fourth game occurred. Eventually, the second Edgeworth game would become the missing link that Ace Attorney 5 had been at the time since it still hasn't been localized and may never be, but more on that later. The point is that I was glad to have anything at this point since it gave me hope that there would be more in the future, and I've made it a policy to buy just about everything Ace Attorney there is to make sure we keep getting more. It's one of the few series I make a point to support that way.

Anyway, Ace Attorney Investigations was a different type of game than the mainline series besides just playing as a prosecutor instead of a defense attorney. It wasn't just a point and click game, but now there were actual sprites and the ability to physically move Edgeworth around the crime scene. It was a cool change of pace, but with the first game, it feels like they didn't quite know what all they wanted to do with this format yet. I've often said that AAI1 is the prototype and AAI2 is the finished product. That's not to say AAI1 is a bad game. I enjoy it a lot, and I was actually playing it today, in fact! It never reaches the lows Apollo Justice did, but at the same time, it never reaches the highs of the original trilogy either. It's somewhere in between.

Playing as Edgeworth is great (I'm convinced the reason this game exists at all is because how much people loved his playable segment in 3-5), although honestly, he's a little too smart compared to Phoenix or Apollo. He sometimes drops big hints himself about what he knows the contradiction is, which is usually reserved for your partner. Ace Attorney Investigations does introduce some really good new characters, most notably Kay Faraday (because everyone needs an energetic female assistant, even Edgeworth!) and Agent Lang to play the rival role that Edgeworth himself would normally occupy. It also makes a boatload of references to the other games and brings back several characters as cameos, so it can give you a nostalgia rush as you play, provided the returning character isn't terrible (like, say, Mike Meekins).

Most of the cases are good but not great. The finale has moments when it borders on greatness, but it really overstays its welcome and hurts itself in the long run. Many people are fond of the flashback case, but I have several issues with it that I won't elaborate on here for the sake of space and spoilers. The third case is really cool, largely because I love the amusement park setting and the Little Thief simulation of the Haunted House is fantastic (Oh right, Kay has a special gadget called Little Thief that enables her to recreate crime scenes and events to help the investigation along, which is a pretty neat gimmick). The first two cases have their moments, but they're largely nothing special. I will say that Ace Attorney Investigations might have my favorite soundtrack in the series though. The music here is excellent. It feels like the series' first attempt at a full-scale soundtrack, and they did a really good job with it.

66. Super Smash Bros. (Anagram)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K783SDTBKmg

The original Super Smash Bros. commercial might still be the single greatest piece of video gaming propaganda ever produced, and it's not like the game even needed it. The concept alone was enough to make everyone who grew up on Nintendo want it. I feel like I should say it was obvious that this would succeed, but maybe it wasn't considering other companies have tried similar ventures and failed. It actually had to be a good game instead of just a good idea, and thankfully, it was. Now I have no intention of discussion whether Smash Bros. is a fighting game or not. Much like arguing whether or not Zelda is an RPG, I can't even pretend to care about how a game like this is classified. As a fighting game fanboy, I love the fact that Smash Bros. is similar and yet radically different from your traditional fighter. I can have a blast either way. That being said, I only ever do 4 person fights in Smash (even if we have to use CPUs) with items on. I'm playing this because I want crazy chaos and because it's something I don't have to take seriously. I just want to laugh the whole time whenever I turn on Smash Bros. I'm also one of those weirdos who prefers Time to Stock, as well as one of those weirdos who's done the 99 minute fight and the 99 stock fight. Yeah, I have problems.

Strangely enough, I never actually owned the original Super Smash Bros. I'd just rent it from Blockbuster for five days, play a ton of it, and then take it back until the urge to play it again arose, and so the cycle would begin anew. Even the single-player content can be pretty fun, whether it's the Arcade mode climaxing with the fight against Master Hand, Board the Platforms, or Break the Targets. I'm pretty sure I beat them all with every character, although I remember Yoshi's version of Break the Targets to be particularly tough, partly due to the fact that he doesn't have an Up-B to give him an extra jump. Speaking of jumps, Link's jump was pretty pathetic in the original game. If you were fighting on the Great Fox and you were on the bottom part, Link literally couldn't get back to the top without using his Up-B. The real appeal of the game was multiplayer though, of course.

My favorite Smash Bros. characters across all games are Kirby and Luigi. I love Kirby's Copy powers. There was just something thrilling about seeing Kirby transform into Nintendo characters and use their abilities. His throws were the best, too, and he's got all those extra jumps. Yeah, he's lightweight, but the benefits outweigh the disadvantages for me. Luigi was kind of an all-or-nothing type character with his Jump Punch and his Green Missile, but I liked the fact that they were risky to use. My favorite stage in the original is probably Hyrule Castle. It looks really cool and seeing your friend get blown away by a tornado was always funny. Favorite items are definite the Hammer (watching all your friends and even the CPU scatter in all directions as soon as you pick it up is great) and the Home Run Bat. I got so proficient with one-shotting with the Home Run Bat that my friends would literally just throw it off the side if they got to it first to prevent me from getting it instead of trying to use it themselves. Nearly all of my friends are bad at fighters though, so I wouldn't actually consider myself to be great at Smash Bros. I just never had legit competition, but I was okay with that. Winning never got old, and Smash was just for fun anyway.

65. Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (Dragon66116)
Wd6GVb2

This is the game I beat for the first time most recently. I just finished it a month or two ago, and it's definitely my favorite of the three mainline Layton games I've played thus far. I mentioned this in the FFXIII-2 writeup, but I really like time travel plots. Of course, Layton plots are never what they appear to be, but I still enjoyed the premise here. Plus, it managed to throw a swerve at me with the ending that I totally wasn't anticipating at all, and it made it that much more effective for me. You also get to see a side of Layton that you don't get in the first two games, where he's essentially a Sherlockian Ubermensch who always has all the right answers and never makes a mistake. Unwound Future does a lot to humanize him for me, especially with his relationship with Claire.

All Professor Layton games are essentially the same in terms of gameplay. The majority of the game is spent solving literally hundreds of puzzles as you go from place to place advancing the plot. Most of the characters are glorified puzzle dispensers, although there are a few each game that are pretty charming despite being so one-dimensional. Unwound Future has a pretty good cast though out of the characters who actually do matter to the plot, which helps it a lot. Layton games can start to feel monotonous after a while, and it can bog down the experience if you get stuck on a puzzle. I imagine everyone has a particular type of puzzle they struggle with, and for me, it's the geometry puzzles. I'm just no good at them, which I suppose makes sense since it was my least favorite math subject in school. I personally prefer the logic puzzles, where they give you some clues and you have to make a deduction from them, such as figuring out which sibling is the oldest or which person entered the room last or what have you.

Unwound Future in particular has a lot of charm to it. Future London is a really neat setting, and I had a lot of fun trying to figure out what the particulars of the mystery were (and generally being dead wrong as I am wont to be with games like this). Layton games are weird in that you can usually guess what the "solution" will be from the start, but how they get from point A to point B is usually a wild and crazy ride. It's sometimes a little too crazy for my tastes, and it feels like the proposed supernatural solution that the game goes out of its way to deny would make more sense than the answer they actually give you. It's a lot of fun in the moment though, even if you look back in hindsight and wonder what the heck just happened. Unwound Future found a good balance between sounding reasonable and being insane though, as strange as that is to say. Either way, it was definitely a good experience.

64. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (Janus5k)
i7KITQB

A game centered around Final Fantasy music? You had me at "Hello!" I'm a big fan of the series and its music, so even though I'm not a rhythm game guy, I took the plunge. The first game was kind of limited, with just three songs apiece from each mainline game and a couple extras, and the characters were mostly the lead protagonists from each game (which was fine with me because the main character is almost always the best character). I still had a lot of fun with it though. Curtain Call expanded both the roster and song selection (321 total, counting DLC), even going outside of Final Fantasy for some of the DLC songs, which was neat. They even added mission maps, where you could go through various courses with a different selection of songs each time at varying difficulties depending on the level of your party. It was fun going through them not knowing what song you were going to get next, like setting up a randomized playlist of music.

Theatrhythm has two different types of songs: Battle themes (which are self-explanatory) and Field themes, which can be anything from world map music to airship themes to dungeon themes. The battle themes are set up like a traditional battle with four characters on the screen, and you go through an array of classic enemies, including some of Final Fantasy's most legendary bosses, like Safer Sephiroth. The field themes are just one character strolling through a given area, and another character takes their places if you mess up too much because they'll "fall down." The field themes are generally easier. I can do perfect runs on field themes fairly regularly, even at higher difficulties. Battle themes can be rough for me, especially at the Ultimate difficulty. If I've played a lot of this game in a short span of time, my hand is usually sore from all the tapping and swiping I've done, but it's a lot of fun.

Some people (Quinton first and foremost among them) can't get past Theatrhythm's art style, and I don't totally blame them. It's not great. It's still really cool to get to have a bunch of series staples all gathered together in one place and reimagined. Plus, you can assemble your dream RPG parties (provided you don't like crappy characters), and play through all your favorite songs again (assuming your taste isn't terrible). Heck, you can even have two different versions of Cloud or Yuna on the same team! I just wish all these Final Fantasy crossover games would stop using Ramza's worst design (his Chapter 1 look with the ponytail). The other two are way better!

63. Tetris Plus (LeonhartFour)
cnUPkjC

This is Tetris as it was always meant to be played! Okay, maybe not, but it's definitely the version I've had the most fun with over the years! Tetris Plus is basically Tetris combined with Lemmings, which sounds like a bizarre concept (and it kinda is), but it's a blast. Normally, the goal in Tetris is just to keep clearing lines and avoid letting the blocks stack up to the top, but there's an added wrinkle in Tetris Plus. There's a professor/archaeologist on the screen here, and the objective is to get him to the indicated exit. Now for a professor, this dude's pretty stupid. He'll walk straight ahead until he runs into something, and then he'll turn the other way and do the same thing. If there's a gap big enough for him to fit, he'll just fall through, even if it means plunging headlong to his death. Well, he does have infinite lives, so I guess he has a rather detached view of life and death! Anyway, you have to use the Tetris blocks to clear lines or block gaps so he can make it to the goal. Also, if you drop a block directly on top of him, he'll climb it. Oh right, to make things even more frenetic, there's a spiked ceiling that slowly drops the longer it takes you to reach the exit.

It's been a long time since I've played this, so maybe it's not as good as I remember, but my best friend and I played Tetris Plus a ton since there's a 2-player mode where the goal is to see who can get the professor to the exit the fastest. I don't know why, but we were utterly enchanted by this professor's abject stupidity. We would just yell and laugh in sheer delight at the screen as he died over and over again. Tetris Plus was just a source of dumb fun for the both of us, and I guess we were at the right age for it because middle school is the height of "dumb fun." I'd like to play it again one of these days to see if I still like it as much as I did then.

Never enjoyed those kinds of puzzle games.

I'm not even sure why they call them that. I like puzzles, but to me that means there's a part where you "solve" it and it's intellectually satisfying and you move on.

Games like Tetris involve building a skill as you react to the endless but limited conditions it gives you. I like the mercenaries mini game in resident evil too but modes where you wait for time to run down kind of bore me.

62. Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Raka_Putra)
miTcwyI

About a year ago, I watched the original trailer they released when this game was first announced, and it's kinda crazy how different it was from the finished product. It was a lot darker and presented Phoenix and Layton as actual rivals who don't see eye to eye (which the "versus" implies) instead of being friendly partners like they were in the actual game. Part of me wonders if that would've been better than what we got, although the ending probably still would've gone off the deep end. This is half a Professor Layton game, after all, so it probably wouldn't have fixed one of the game's bigger problems. I hadn't played a Layton game before this though, so I didn't totally understand what I was getting into the first time around! Regardless, I had a good time getting introduced to the world of Professor Layton through the lens of Ace Attorney.

I really enjoyed the premise and the setting of this game. Team Layton and Team Ace Attorney are both transported into a medieval world where witches are feared above all else and a man known as the Storyteller has the power to turn anything he writes into reality, or so it seems. As I said in the Unwound Future writeup, nothing is ever as it seems in a Layton game! However, like I said, this was my introduction to the series, and Ace Attorney does have some supernatural elements to it, so I didn't know what to expect from the story. The court segments are pretty wild though, as you might expect from a literal witch trial. You have multiple witnesses testifying at once and changing their testimony on the fly, a gallery that's more like an angry mob than anything else, and convicted witches being sent to the flames as soon as the trial ends. The game does a great job on selling the fact that this is a totally different world than the characters are used to, and that the deck is completely stacked against them, which makes their repeated victories all the more impressive.

Most of the cases are decent but not great, but the environment and atmosphere are strong enough to keep you invested, as I said. However, the game's best case is excellent, and I'd argue that it's a borderline top ten contender for the entire Ace Attorney series. It has a really solid cast of characters, a few unexpected and well done twists, and an ending that tugs at your heartstrings in more ways than one. Speaking of the cast, one of the biggest appeals of the game (at least for me) was the fact that we got Phoenix and Maya back together for the first time since the original trilogy, and they certainly don't disappoint. As per usual for a Layton game, a lot of the characters you interact with are mostly there to give you puzzles, but it does have a few really good ones. My personal favorite unique characters here are Darklaw, Barnham (the two prosecutors/"inquisitors" for the game), and Emeer, who is essentially medieval Larry Butz if he were a raging alcoholic.

The game is very good at having fun at its own expense. There are several "bonus episodes" you can download (for free) once you beat the game, and they just mercilessly destroy the fourth wall the whole time, as well as poke fun at some of the more ridiculous elements of the story. Also, I mentioned before that Ace Attorney Investigations is probably my favorite soundtrack in the series, but this game isn't far behind. It's all orchestrated, and hearing some classic tunes redone in that style is fantastic. Overall, Layton vs. Ace Attorney is a clearly flawed game, but it's also very self-aware of its own shortcomings, so you're still able to have a really good time with it in spite of them.

Favorite FF song is Ultima and I was sad it got snubbed from Curtain Call. I did have fun with the game though. I can see myself returning to it every now and then.

Favorite puzzle game is Portal 2 and it's not even close.

@tazzyboyishere it's DLC for Curtain Call. That's actually how I first heard it! I think it was one of the two DLCs I bought (the other was Nier, IIRC).

I think it goes OoT<infamous<CC<SMB1<AA4

And that all of them will fall between 70 and 40.

So since I'm now completely out, let's see how I did.

The second statement is hilariously wrong. 0/5 I underestimated how many things would be nominated Leon actually enjoyed a lot.

I almost got the relative ordering completely correct though, just misplaced AA4 kinda badly. It was hard to guess though, would it be better than all of them just because it was AA? Or would even a disliked AA game rank low? Alas, more than latter.

61. Mega Man 2 (LOLIAmAnAlt)
qAdJvw5

This is my favorite Mega Man Classic game. It introduced some series staples, like Robot Master rematches, Wily Castles, and energy tanks. It probably has the best soundtrack of the Classic games, too. As I've said in the other Mega Man writeups, my barometer for measuring good Mega Man games is based on Robot Masters and their powers. Other than Mega Man 1 and the original Mega Man X (who have the advantage because they came first), Mega Man 2 probably has the most memorable lineup in the series. Wood Man is probably the weak link both as a boss and for the power he gives (I've never been a big fan of the "shield" powers), but even he's pretty decent because he has a funny design. Of course, in terms of powers, the Metal Blade is legendary. Multiple bosses are weak to it, including Metal Man himself, and you can shoot four of them for every bar on the gauge, which is ridiculous. Since ammo pickups are fairly frequent, you can essentially use it with reckless abandon as a substitute Mega Buster. Other personal favorites for me include the Time Stopper, the Quick Boomerang, and the Crash Bomber. I've said I don't remember the stages very often, but I do recall one particular segment of Quick Man's stage with the horizontal bars of instant death, which is the main reason I love the Time Stopper.

I also have a weird anecdote relating to Mega Man 2. When I was in 4th grade, our teacher kept a collection of books in her room that we could borrow, and among them was a Mega Man 2 novelization. I decided to borrow it, but I forgot to return it before summer break. When we came back the next year, I found out she had retired, so I just kept it. I don't think I still have it though, unless it's packed away in my mom's attic or something. I think it actually stayed true to the game in terms of Robot Master weaknesses and stuff like that, although it had this weird twist where Dr. Light tried to clone Mega Man as a failsafe but accidentally turned him human instead, which is used to explain Bad Boxart Mega Man who looks like a human instead of a robot (since the MM2 boxart is used as the cover for the book). Not long ago, I decided to try to look it up to see if I could find the book or find any info about the book, and I discovered that the Angry Video Game Nerd actually did a video on it where he reads the whole book (which only takes an hour and 15 minutes since it's a kid's book). I doubt anyone actually wants to see/hear it, but here's the link anyway!

There's more than one way to build intensity in a boss fight. You can make even a relatively easy fight intense with the appropriate atmosphere, such as the aforementioned Leviathan fight in FFXV. A boss fight doesn't have to be hard to be satisfying.
