64. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (Janus5k)
i7KITQB

A game centered around Final Fantasy music? You had me at "Hello!" I'm a big fan of the series and its music, so even though I'm not a rhythm game guy, I took the plunge. The first game was kind of limited, with just three songs apiece from each mainline game and a couple extras, and the characters were mostly the lead protagonists from each game (which was fine with me because the main character is almost always the best character). I still had a lot of fun with it though. Curtain Call expanded both the roster and song selection (321 total, counting DLC), even going outside of Final Fantasy for some of the DLC songs, which was neat. They even added mission maps, where you could go through various courses with a different selection of songs each time at varying difficulties depending on the level of your party. It was fun going through them not knowing what song you were going to get next, like setting up a randomized playlist of music.

Theatrhythm has two different types of songs: Battle themes (which are self-explanatory) and Field themes, which can be anything from world map music to airship themes to dungeon themes. The battle themes are set up like a traditional battle with four characters on the screen, and you go through an array of classic enemies, including some of Final Fantasy's most legendary bosses, like Safer Sephiroth. The field themes are just one character strolling through a given area, and another character takes their places if you mess up too much because they'll "fall down." The field themes are generally easier. I can do perfect runs on field themes fairly regularly, even at higher difficulties. Battle themes can be rough for me, especially at the Ultimate difficulty. If I've played a lot of this game in a short span of time, my hand is usually sore from all the tapping and swiping I've done, but it's a lot of fun.

Some people (Quinton first and foremost among them) can't get past Theatrhythm's art style, and I don't totally blame them. It's not great. It's still really cool to get to have a bunch of series staples all gathered together in one place and reimagined. Plus, you can assemble your dream RPG parties (provided you don't like crappy characters), and play through all your favorite songs again (assuming your taste isn't terrible). Heck, you can even have two different versions of Cloud or Yuna on the same team! I just wish all these Final Fantasy crossover games would stop using Ramza's worst design (his Chapter 1 look with the ponytail). The other two are way better!

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Final Fantasy song?
