A Silent Voice was the first film I watched of the 'big 3' of 2017, and it set a bar I didn't think was reachable. For me, Your Name still managed to beat it, but only by the thinnest of margins. Kyoto Animation truly knocked this adaptation of the park. They made a stunning film that sent us on a journey with the best new male character of 2017 (damn the nomination rules), Shoya Ishida. We start from the lowest possible moment another human being can go through, contemplating suicide, and watch him on the path of not only finding friends, but finding his own self and self-worth. I experienced nearly every emotion you can in the 2 hours with this movie, all joined by the phenomenal production values KyoAni is known for. The only criticism I really have is the film structure meant the development of some side characters were reduced, leaving something to be desired from the original manga. Every other aspect of the adaptation was almost perfect, and why anime are such a special medium that manga just doesn't fulfill. A spectacle that should be enjoyed by everyone at least once, along with Your Name, that made 2017 a little brighter.

I could make a long sappy post about how much I love A Silent Voice, but honestly just go out and watch it if you can. Or read the manga, or whatever. I'm about 25% through that and it's really good also.

I haven't seen Monogatari, so I forgot that Kizu came out and would be getting votes. Now I wish I'd given Your Name +5 instead of +1 so it could have had a better shot at beating A Silent Voice. Shouldn't have wasted votes hoping to sneak something interesting into third place.

Girls' Last Tour was an impressive experience for me, particularly in how it approached both the characters and the setting. The post-apocalypse rarely lends itself to hope or humor, but those were the feelings that stayed with me whenever I finished an episode. However, it's important to note that Girls' Last Tour never shied away from the darker aspects of its premise. The world is repeatedly shown as broken, and, aside from the occasional childlike fantasy, Chito and Yuuri don't seem to think that society will ever recover. They keep moving despite that, finding joy wherever they can. Everything may be in ruins, but watching these two live their daily lives always left me with an odd hope for the future.

When Titan S1 came out back in 2013, it was a contender for my favorite show ever...for the first 8 episodes or so. It's not that it got worse after that, really, the pacing just slowed down substantially. I loved the show, and it was one of my favorites of the year, just not quite best anime ever quality. With S2, they took enough time that they could do things right. Every episode is packed full of awesome content, the animation is even better than S1's, there are crazy twists and turns, and minor characters from before get fleshed out with fantastic backstories. Every episode is consistently excellent. There are no lulls. The actual content of the show isn't terribly different from the first season, which is a good thing. It's just executed better here. The top three wasn't particularly hard for me to pick, since the other two shows are pretty fantastic at their best. However, they have flaws. Titan S2 doesn't. It's everything you'd want from a sequel.

I get the feeling the first place entry is really solid. It was a bit of a diamond in the rough, but eventually it came to shine. I'm saying it was a real gem.

I wonder if this is worse than the 2015 results. Obviously Titan S2 is better than Food Wars which sucked, in fact it's great, but this year had far more series deserving of the top spots than 2015 yet so it's grosser.

Anyway some final thoughts...

I enjoyed running this. Even with weak votals, it was great to see everyone come together to vote and I'm quite appreciative of all who voted and/or followed these awards.

I will say, I'm not too huge on the voting format, personally. If voltch, wants to take the reigns back come next year, it's all his. He's the original creator, plus his name's a bigger draw! If he declines, you can probably expect a completely different format, though I haven't really decided on what to do yet.

I'm fairly happy with most of the categories, but, once again, if I return as host, there's two categories I'm probably axing, and one that might be, depending on how the year plays out. I'll also just throw in some thoughts on new categories that I thought of adding, but backed out on due to perceived issues:

Best Moment (Spoiler issues)
Best Animation (Worried it would be ignored or just viewed the same as Best Art)
Best Music (Does anyone actually care outside of OPs/EDs? And would they differentiate them from the OSTs?)

Feel free to give thoughts for me or voltch or whoever runs this next year! Even open to other category ideas!

Also just about the categories themselves, I thought Comedy and Drama just getting their own awards was silly when shows that don't fall into either very well get shafted. Combining comedy/SoL was a good idea imo, but Drama/Action was dumb and I can't believe nobody questioned that. The overlap it created was frustrating and it probably screwed a few shows out of placing (Doubt it affected the winners though). They should probably just be made into separate categories, and the host needs to establish that users can put the same show into 2 different categories (Or 3 if there's a comedy/action/drama out there...)

I think that's it. Hopefully everyone had fun, even if the results may have been disappointing for some!
