"How Evil"

In terms of like capturing a character I don't think there's a much better choice for this season. Just the pure fun, mischievousness, and cuteness of Satania is just a 100% bullseye with the performance.

"Perfect. Cute. Dignified."

Tomoyo Kurosawa has been gaining a lot of recolonization within the anime community and its fandom. Much of it had to do with voicing Kumiko in Hibike! Euphonium and what has become known as the "Kumiko noise". Basically her non verbal sound effects she makes with her voice and does it jut better than anyone else in the business. She continues doing this with standout character Phosphophyllite. But not only do we get to see just how much she can add without words we also get to see the range of what she can do. She just has a level natural and genuine emotion in just about everything she says. I fully expect that she'll start to break into full stardom within the next couple of years.

I would have bumped up Rei/Hina probably if I had gotten through the most recent arc when I sent in my noms. I had the Netjuu couple on top, surprised no representation.

EDIT: Though technically I had 'Hayashi and Lily' on top, so maybe I was intended to distinguish that from Moriko and Yuuta? I don't know.

Best Vocal Performance

First Place
Aki Toyosaki as Altair from Re:Creators
With 12.12% of the Vote

https://www.anime-planet.com/images/people/aki-toyosaki-2822.jpg?t=1457961048

Mac
K-ON! was a pretty cool little show for voice actors. KyoAni has a history of using unknown voice actors that later become superstars, and I think K-ON probably has more of those than any of their other shows do. However, while Yoko Hikasa is amazing for the strength of her voice and the power of her performances, Aki Toyosaki has, IMO, surpassed her. I didn't think too much of her back in her early days of voice acting. She had a bit of an annoying voice, and she often played cutesy characters I didn't really care for. Since then, however, she's shown an incredible range. I often don't even recognize her and am shocked when I check the VAs for the show after. Altair in Re:Creators was another of those examples, and quite possibly her best role yet. She conveys a quiet intelligence throughout the show, infused with a smoldering hatred that lets you know just how contemptuous she is of the creators, and climaxes with some incredible emotional scenes as well. RC had a couple of my very favorite vocal performances of the year, with even many of the minor roles being done in unusual or interesting ways, but Aki Toyosaki's Altair was the best of them.

For the record, my third vote in Best Couple was Maika/Dino from Blend-S

As for Best Vocal Performance, I didn't vote in that one just because it didn't seem right. I'm still new to anime so I don't even know the names of the famous voice actors and I certainly won't recognize their voices. I would've just given points to the people voicing characters I liked most for no reason other than that I liked them and that didn't seem fair.

Yeah here were my votes

+5 Tomoyo Kurosawa (Phos - Land of the Lustrous)
+3 Hitomi Nabatame (Akane Kosaka - Saekano Season 2)
+1 Shiori Izawa (Nanachi - Made in Abyss)

Regardless of anything else I have to say about LotL I do think the VA for Phos did an excellent job with what had to be a pretty wide range of styles. I'm not surprised at all that nobody else voted for this random Saekano side character that appears for like 1 episode, but man I'll be damned if the VA didn't knock one out of the park whenever her character was on-screen. Nanachi just sounds adorable and I'm kind of sad she didn't win anything, though with the way this category worked out I'm not too surprised there either.

I should look up what won best Seiyu when I still ran it.

Probably Risa Taneda/Saori Hayami grabbed the wins. Though when I used to run it, it was very heavily skewed towards female performers.

Not a bad thing, since as Mac pointed out, we've had a number of recent years with stronger depth for women characters.

With the powerhouse known as Megumin in the cast it's no surprise that this one came home with placement in this category. I'll be honest I don't think the overall cast is as strong as DropOut but Megumin is undoubtedly a top tier tier girl. If you don't know I really like things like witches hats. But she really takes things up to another level in the second season. TBH if she was eligible she'd be on or near the top of my best character ballot. However, I've always been taking a bigger like into Aqua as well. I was kind of annoyed at her in S1 but now she's become suddenly almost endearing in a way. It's at the point where I might even like her more than Megumin.

Mac
Re:Creators is basically a show where they talk 80+% of the time, so it was essential for it to have a great cast, and for the most part, it really did. Due to its gimmick of taking characters from different genres and series, the cast has a huge variety, and the way they interact with each other is incredibly interesting. Magane and Altair are two of my favorite characters of the year, and every single one of the other Creations is good too, IMO. Obviously some are better than others, but I was never disappointed when they were on screen. The human cast isn't quite as strong, but the most important creator (Matsubara) was excellent at least, and the edgy manga creators were pretty fun too. I feel like some series underutilize their excellent casts by never having them interact with each other (Senjougahara never speaks a word to half the cast of Monogatari, for example), but thanks to the huge confrontations in RC basically everyone gets some scenes. Mamika's interactions with pretty much everyone are incredible, and make her character way more interesting than if she'd only gotten to talk to the MC and one or two others. Without RC, I think 2017 would've been a little bit of a weak year for characters, so I'm really glad we got this to reignite my favorites list.

Good winners. Ended up going with My Hero Academia, but those two were pretty much neck-and-neck for my first place vote. Both had really strong casts. The thing about My Hero Academia's cast though is that it's pretty huge, and even despite that there's a only a very small number of misses. And all of those characters have really fun and quirky (get it?) personalities, and their interactions with each other are great also.

Ancient Magus' Bride was my +1 for the record, though it was a distant 3rd place.

It was one of the more well received anime of the year. Personally my #1, though not to an enormous degree. Would have been a lot more popular if it were on Crunchyroll, sadly, since nothing can really blow up huge on Amazon.

KonoSuba 2 picks up where season one left off. While S1 had a pretty weak conclusion, KonoSuba 2 ramps the comedy back up to its true form, and even with two Darkness-centric episodes in a row at one point, the quality never really hit a snag. Its consistent laughs made from hilarious characters, solid writing, and some of the best voicework this year.

Best Comedy/Slice of Life

Second Place
Girls' Last Tour
With 13.89% of the Vote

https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/12/88321.jpg

Roba
For an anime set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where humanity will almost certainly soon be extinct, Girls' Last Tour was an excellent comedy. The story so easily could've lost itself in depression, but the focus instead settled on Chito and Yuuri finding ways to have fun in a world where fun almost has no right to exist. Everything was a joy to watch, whether it was their opposing personalities conflicting or their wild guesses at how strange devices might've once functioned. There was also a solid slice-of-life aspect to the anime, of course, showing these two eke out a living no matter how harsh their situation became.
