If a cashier isn't doing well, should they go in to work/be punished? If they're vomiting but it might be food poisoning? Feeling a bit hot/cold but it might not be a fever? Headache? Bit of a runny nose/cough? Where is the line between 'I'm feeling a bit under the weather but can work' and 'go home'? Assuming you can't work anywhere else in the store for whatever reason.

Problem is, most stores (I assume) are understaffed as it is (to save money, I guess) so theres a lot of pressure to not call out sick.

I had strep throat my first year teaching and a doctor's note that said I wasn't allowed at the school for 48 hours to prevent infection. School still told me I had to come in because they couldn't find a sub.

If i was a parent, and i heard the school tell a teacher that i would be pissed, would rather them lose two days of classes then get sick with a serious illness.

On a completely different note, I wonder why it isn't the norm to wear a mouth cover if you are sick and have to be out in the public. As ridiculous as it may look, you are doing it for the good of others. Of course such cover isn't exactly necessary if folks actually covered their mouths when they cough/sneeze and not cough/sneeze into their hands but not everyone is that courteous.

Ideally, they should stay home, but real life isn't ideal. Most people in low-level jobs like cashiers are probably not going to work sick just because they love the job that much.

In a lot of asian countries it is. Even non-sick people wear them sometimes when out in crowded public places just in case.

If you have the sick time use it. I hate that people think there is something weak about using sick time.
Listen, sure it'll be abused, but if you're sick be sick. Rest. Get better.

Fuck.

I would be too. Course, he could have just told the students and turned the class into a studygroup so long as they stayed in the back half of the room and he put on one of those masks, but that's a 100% hindsight/outsider thingy as opposed to 'I am so smart and you are a fool!' thoughts.

Agreed and employers should pay for that time. If they don't, you better believe everyone living on a tight budget is coming in with the plague.

If you have flu/food poisoning then stay the fuck home.

If it is a cold then I don't mind so much, as long as you make sure to keep your hands clean and don't breath on people.

This, tbh. Plus retail employees frequently call out sick, especially on fictitious grounds.

In the case of retail, they wouldn't effectively be able to do their job. For the rest of the population, it's a cultural thing.

Actually, in the military, they do that. They always make sick and infectious people wear them. At least, at the bases I've been stationed. And some people wear them just to not catch whatever. Some people also wear them because they have allergies...

It's really not an issue of courtesy or Japan would just carry tissues, not masks. You're not going to catch every one so a mask is just practical.

Yea... I really hate that. Especially due to struggles with suicidal depression. 'Oh. You're feeling a bit down today? Well no one cares so get on the main register and deal with hundreds of shrieking customers! I don't like that glum look and the fact that I can almost see the light fading from your eyes and stormclouds brewing. You give 110%! Damnit! Why are you now on attempt 3?'

Yup, and it's a freagin plague (literally!).

Also way too many people don't realize how freagin long a cold is contagious for (hint: colds last more than 24-48 hours. A lot more).

I lead a team of software engineers, and the company we work for has a very free vacation/sick day policy. Essentially, as long as stuff gets done, you can take off all you want. If that's not an option, you can work from home as long as you like as long as you don't abuse it.

Yet I almost have to yell at my direct reports not to come in when they're sick. There's literally no pressure on them to come. They're getting their raises and promotions anyway. It doesn't eat in their vacation time in any way, shape or form. They don't even have deadlines! I'm their freagin manager and I tell them its okay. But many of them don't listen. It's like they have PTSD or something.

Well, they're just looking for warm bodies. Everything about working in retail or food services is inherently dehumanizing.
