RedZaraki 01/15/18 10:24:23 AM #1:	Can we talk for a few minutes about why the Shithole Countries comment is so remarkably racist? I just haven't seen this point made on Reddit or the reports I've read only from a podcast did I hear Dara Lind explain it this way. Yes, the remark is an obvious insult to African nations, but put in the context of the meeting it also becomes an expression of undeniable racism. At the meeting, some senators were describing to Trump the agreement they'd made about an immigration program involving the Diversity Immigrant Visa. They didn't know which details were important to Trump's position (because when they asked he didn't give them an answer more specific than "everything"), so the Republicans bargained to get rid of things Trump had made public statements against. This was made difficult because Trump's public statements were all wrong: he described it as a way for African dictators to send their worst dregs to America and sabotage it, as a golden ticket where the US paid the moving costs of foreigners, and as a loophole to bypass the screening and vetting processes that once in the US, these visa winners would become freeloaders living off welfare and free medicine. Whether Trump believed these things or had just railed against them to rile his base didn't matter; the senators bargained to change the system such that Trump could conclude he'd fixed all those problems. Keep in mind what the Diversity Lottery Visa actually does is much less dramatic: a "lottery winner" just gets their application entered into months-long process of screening and vetting. They win the chance to be considered for a visa. They have to pay their own way to the US, prove that they can speak English, are law-abiding citizens, and are healthy. The process selects for applicants who are intelligent, educated, skilled, and driven; who can make demonstrable, quantifiable contributions to US society. Individuals enter the lottery on their own, for free, with no dictator middle man involved anywhere in the process. So Trump comes into the room to get an update and the senators are filling him in. They've removed, technically, the "lottery" aspect from the program because Trump's railed against it. The program still operates in a similar way, but Trump can claim to have gotten the win, fixed the system, and done away with the Diversity Lottery program. But they describe what they're doing with Haitians and Trump responds with "Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out [of the deal]." They describe how immigrants from African nations are handled he and asks, "Why do we want all these people from shithole countries coming here?" And, see, this is where he blows all his non-racist cover away. The only factor he cares about here is that the immigrants are from Africa. They're black. He can't claim he's interested in stopping the lottery, because the negotiating senators took care of that. He can't claim he's concerned whether these immigrants speak English, are sick, can pay their own way, are law-abiding, intelligent, educated, skilled, or driven. They spend months proving all of this to a small army of civil servants. But Trump doesn't care about that. Trump's said lots of racist stuff, but what makes this remarkable is the fact that he has no out. He can't claim that what he was really concerned about was crime, violence, border integrity, or any other dog whistle he'd normally toss out, because the negotiating senators had already accounted for such concerns. He can't claim he was just doing this to satisfy his base, because the senators had given him a way to tell his base he'd fixed the problem.
