Blast, it really has been a long time since I played CT, so I am not entirely certain how far in that is, but I think that is far along enough that I'm not going to tell you to keep going if you do not like it.

Not sure what you consider a 'good' game if Chrono Trigger doesn't do it for you.

That being said - you are close to a major point in the game. I'd try playing it up until you get to the Kingdom of Zeal ( I'm not spoiling anything - but you aren't too far away) and if you don't like it by then, you won't.

I found it to be good (gave it a 7/10 here), nothing mind blowing, and it never really strayed from that.

The appeal to chrono trigger for me, is that besides it being the best RPG at the time, (never played a final fantasy for the snes XD) The replay value is what I really liked. One of the few games with a new game plus. You have multiple endings and different ways the story can turn out. Were you able to convince people at the trial?

I was following a guide through CT. Maybe that's why I'm not having the greatest experience.

The script isn't gripping. There doesn't seem to be any real direction atm and I'm just not feeling the thrill I usually get from similar games.

I had so much hope for this....

In before someone says FF7 is better than CT.

Anyway, the thing about CT is how... "focused" the game is. Aside maybe from the 12,000 BC segment and the Black Omen, there's zero "fluff. Everything is part of the core game, almost all of the side quests (aside exceptions you can count on one hand's fingers) have relevant plot elements and significant rewards. Every area you walk into matter. Everything you see or hear is important.

The story and main game are "short" (by Skyrim and Tales of...' standards), but it's all meat. All the characters have development, none are stupid/annoying or make you wish they shouldn't be there.

Many modern RPGs do some stuff better, but they all also do a lot of things worse. CT is what you get if you take all of the good stuff, get rid of all the bad and present what's left.

One thing CT does NOT do well however, is hold out in the face of FAQs and guides. It's only good if you discover everything it has to offer on your own. Back then, while dead tree guides were a thing, games were not designed to be good while following a guide. Few things will beat the magic of discovering some of the major side quests on your own or realizing a weapon you thought was useless can be made one of the best in the game through a side arc. That feeling of "OMG!" was something I rarely got again since the end of the SNES era.

Who plays rpgs with a guide on a first play through and expects to have any fun at all? All you are doing is moving where it tells you and taking breaks to read exactly where to go without even exploring yourself or feeling any sense of adventure or being surprised by new areas/items/or enemies? That's a giant no-no for any rpg if you actually want to have a good time.

Take back this mistake and play the game without a guide starting right now and make your own decisions on everything including which characters you want to use

Seriously, if you don't like the millennial fair and exploring and talking to random residents in 1000ad, then the child inside you is dead and you should probably get back to worrying about fiscal responsibility and retirement investing instead of playing cute video games with toriyama characters and excellent music/atmosphere

Also, if you didn't ride the ferry in chrono trigger in the beginning and have fun, then you're probably not my friend

I chose to use a guide after I got the frog guy.

I'm on a mission to play all the games I would have loved as a kid (via emulator).

Through GameFAQs, I've seen CT compared with FFVII too often and wanted to try it.

Well, unless you're fine-tuning where to find certain treasures or how to beat the more mechanically inclined bosses, I would recommend not worrying at all about using any guide.

Why on earth would you follow a guide for a JRPG you haven't played? I mean shit Chrono Trigger has a great new game+ feature so even if you miss "cool stuff" you can just go back and play it again. It probably has the best experience in subsequent playthroughs of any JRPG ever made.

When Persona 5 came out I didn't make sure I had a guide, since I wanted to experience the story+characters first hand, and not follow some detailed guide to "optimize" my play.
