Flaming will no longer be defined by how "bad" the flame is. If you are name calling, you will be moderated for flaming if reported (unless it's very clearly in jest). "Light flames" will no longer be a thing. No name calling, period. We will generally start with NWD on flames unless you're using seriously offensive flames in which case you'll probably be moderated for Offensive instead anyway.

So if I'm understanding this right, things that would have been deleted with no karma loss before will not be deleted but the poster will get a note from a mod saying "hey, that's against the rules technically" and things that would have been deleted with 3 karma loss before will be deleted with 0 karma loss now?

Is that right?

Yes and no. The basic premise is right but it isn't that black and white. Some things will still always be NKL'd.

If a game is officially release on January 31st but you get the game on the 28th for whatever reason (store sold it early, someone shipped it early). People posting early screenshots, story summaries, etc is the kind of stuff that gets us contacted by lawyers. Someone just saying "I got my copy early, yay!" won't, and would be NWD territory so we can warn them not to discuss the details.

We've always deleted those when brought to our attention, because of the legal ramifications associated with it. Basically, if you aren't legally allowed to have it on that date, you can't discuss it.

Depends, it's a case by case basis depending on who they are and what they did to get banned. If you're a certain someone who has made over 10,000 accounts to troll the Switch board (yes, this is a real person), then yes. If you had one account banned over repeat minor offenses and decide to come back and reform, no.

I believe it means telling people to "play XYZ game on an emulator" is not allowed, but saying "How do I do blah on some emu?" is fine, or "Wii U emulator progress now crappy game no one wants works."

These are decent changes, I support this.

Side note, once you've cleaned all the junk ads from the site, make an announcement and I'll disable my adblocker here. I'd like to support the site by allowing ads, but each time I come here on mobile my browser is inevitably hijacked or something else stupid happens, which is why I use adblock in the first place (and don't browse on mobile). I'd be fine with ads here if they were nonintrusive and could be trusted not to do anything suspicious.

Does the new NKL disqualify you from making a mod application, as it is replacing the old 3KL, since in the past any karma loss on your history did.

Was not expecting this change to flaming. That's surprising.

Should be a pretty nice improvement over time to the boards, and it makes sense. When you try to draw a line between what flames are okay and what aren't, people will just find that line and sit on it to see how much they can get away with while being abusive and antagonistic towards people.

I also do think going forward it will probably be best to try and get that topic flare thing going to finally remove off-topic as a moderation reason. I feel like basically every general game board I ever frequented needed this. The whole social board split thing never seemed to work except in theory, and with that abandoned it did kind of leave people with no recourse except I guess...get a high level fellow to make a community board for it, or go off-site.

I just hope if/when it's added, you choose the flare BEFORE posting the topic. Because Reddit made me do it when I tried that site AFTER and just...that's dumb and I hated it.

It is unfortunate that this is the death of "clown shoes" as I became quite fond of that since it didn't really have any real punch to it and also just sounded really silly and weird. I mean I often just used it because it sounded funny to me, not even as a real insult.

But I think it's a fair price to pay to also reign in the abundance of stupid "lol cuck" and so on.
