and it's great and all, but I was planning to go see Darkest Hour later today

why are there two different major WWII movies up for awards this year

and is it really worth trying to see both in a day

but I don't really want to wait on Darkest Hour because The Post, I Tonya, and Paddington 2 are all coming this weekend and I feel like I should see all those asap as well, because nothing's been staying in theaters long (hell Downsizing only came out like a week ago or something and it's already left theaters),

The Oscars like three things:
- Movies about how awesome Hollywood is
- Movies about controversies that approach the material in a non-controversial way
- WWII

What I take from this is the the perfect Oscar movie would be about Hollywood during WWII trying to make a propaganda movie about a heroic black soldier but the government saying not to and a few dedicated filmmakers doing it anyway.

I'm about an hour in

I'm not usually one for war movies (with some exceptions) but I am really digging this (90% of which is due to the score)

I'm also a big Nolan fan though and this doesn't even remotely feel like a Nolan movie.

I've fallen asleep during amazing movies, so definitely not an indictment, yeah

although there are some movies I've fallen asleep for multiple views of

so I'd say like falling asleep 3 or more times while attempting to watch a movie is a fair indictment

Yes if this is your only time to see them.

Dunkirk was extremely enjoyable. The lack of dialogue really primes every line to matter.

Alright, so finished Dunkirk

from the Oscary movies I've seen so far this year:

Three Billboards > The Disaster Artist > Get Out > Dunkirk = The Florida Project > The Big Sick > The Greatest Showman > Lady Bird

I haven't disliked any of them so far though, so that's something. Lady Bird is the only one I felt was kind of underwhelming

I don't even know how to compare Dunkirk to other Nolan films yet since it's so different from his other ones. If I had to say right now it'd probably be

Memento > Inception > The Dark Knight > The Prestige > Batman Begins > Interstellar = Dunkirk > Insomnia > The Dark Knight Rises

but that might change when I have more time to think about it

Lady Bird > The Shape of Water > Dunkirk for me at the moment.

The Dark Knight > The Prestige > Batman Begins > The Dark Knight Rises > Interstellar > Memento > Inception > Dunkirk for Nolan movies

the best movie of last year was Mudbound and the only reason it's not getting legitimate award consideration is because it's on Netflix

but because it's on Netflix it's also accessible to more people. so. whatever. beautifully shot, emotionally intelligent film filled with rich characterization and wonderful performances.

I mean I definitely get why people like, and it definitely wasn't bad (Ronan and Metcalf both put on great performances) I just found it to be underwhelming. It didn't bring out nearly as much of an emotional response as some of the other films, nor did it leave much of a lasting impression

it's on my list of things to see, for sure

same goes for Brawl in Cell Block 99

In fact the only reason I haven't really seen it yet is that I'm mostly trying to see the award contenders asap

which sounds shitty as I type it out but that's just kind of the way it is

Just got back from Darkest Hour

really fucking weird seeing both in the same day. It talks about Dunkirk so much you'd think it was part of the same movie

Gary Oldman was fucking amazing and the cinematography was super impressive but... other than that, it was really fucking boring. Felt like an hour longer than it needed to be and the film was only like 2 hours.

The biggest issue is that it's all been done before. The themes, the plot, even the music all felt done to death. Pretty easily my least favorite award contender, despite the incredible work by Oldman

Dunkirk is awesome and probably my favorite war movie. Also, for what it's worth I don't think super highly of Nolan.

It does an absolutely phenomenal job of showing the horrors of war and direness of being vastly overwhelmed. You never actually see the Germans attacking which is absolutely terrifying. It shows war for what it is, an absolute goddamn nightmare. The movie has more in common with the likes of Alien than traditional war movies. It's pretty much a horror film.
