He's right though.

Every successful businsess and company in the world today is built on the foundations created by people and governments who came before them.

Your businsess could not take off without cities, roads, transport, other businsesses, Internet, justice systems etc that you had nothing to do with.

That's close to literally the definition of a society.

You're an egomanic if you cannot accept that and take it as an insult. It doesn't mean you didn't work hard nor that your success is not a result of your actions.

I never understood while people shoved themselves down Obama's mouth for this statement. It's not even a controversial stance.

Obama had the spectacular talent of taking obvious and widely-accepted philosophies and, with a complete lack of self-awareness, deliver them in the most condescending and divisive way possible.

How do you fuck up "It takes a village"? He must have known how that would have come off sounding to a lot of people.

Anyways, as articulated as Obama was, he kind of sucked at speeches. >_>

Saying that somebody who started a business didn't build that because they didn't build the basic infrastructure is like telling an artist they didn't paint that painting because somebody else made the canvas and paints. Like telling a singer they didn't make that album because they didn't build the studio and the sound equipment.

Yes, somebody who builds a business... built that because a business is more than just the brick and mortar, there's plenty of intangible assets there as well. It's just that pro tax Democrats at least subconsciously subscribe to the Marxist notion that ownership is theft, and your income actually belongs to the government and they're just kindly letting you keep some of it. When he said "you didn't build that" the obvious implication was that the government did.

Businesses don't benefit MORE from it, is what I'm saying

they almost certainly do considering that businesses are much more likely to employ large trucks that do disproportionately more wear and tear to roads than passenger vehicles

https://streets.mn/2016/07/07/chart-of-the-day-vehicle-weight-vs-road-damage-levels/

notice that a 10x weight increase corresponds to like 10,000x the damage

that doesn't even account for the fact that businesses can write off things like fuel and fuel taxes as a business expense

Those large trucks are delivering products that we can buy at stores, materials to build houses, etc. They are also bringing services and products to our houses. The benefit extends to everyone.

sounds like pretty socialist logic to me

might as well argue that we should buy cars for everyone because we'd all benefit from the improved economic activity lol

wat

you're saying that businesses don't especially benefit because businesses, in turn, provide us things that we might want

how is that any different from saying that I don't benefit especially by owning a car because I could provide you services you want?

the only difference is that businesses are bigger

Canvas and paints are tip of the iceberg.

How do you show off your painting? Put it on display? Where? How do people get to it? Sell duplicates online? Who gave you the internet, who is printing the duplicates? Who is delivering them? How are the people buying the art able to do so? etc etc

Because of the collective work of society including the shoulders you're standing on who died before you were born.

This is not an unreasonable point.

It's not so much the idea of acknowledging the contributions of others to society that you rely upon, but that Obama was saying it to justify his desire to implement communism/socialism. It was more like "you didn't build that, so I'm gonna take 90% of your income and redistribute it to others and you'd better like it".
