Recently watched Ninja Scroll, Megami Tensei, Angel's Egg, Cat Soup. I haven't been impressed with anime in a long time. These anime have breathed artistic expression back into my mind. These are the types of movies someone would have seen sitting on shelves of movie rental places. I remember those places fondly, it was a magical, grassroots type feel. The one I used to go to the most was very hippy style and near some universities in the forest areas of the west coast of America. There was always some kind of herbal fragrance in the air. Luckily I don't remember the body odor of going into public spaces in the past, oh the horror that would be...

They're avant-garde I'd say. Hopefully modern anime goes back to that style of animation. It's becoming a lost art form.

There's a good HD version of Cat Soup on youtube. Angel's Egg upload is kinda like an old VHS mode, blotchy black squares in a lot of places. And no it doesn't add to the art of it, not that kind of high level hipsterdom.

Googled imaged itz, Mind Game has so much color... X__X seems like an LSD trippy type. Dead Leaves seems like Fooly Cooly but more punk and Japanese skater culture.

lol... Must have been radical. That movie is insanely deep. The french circus type outfits were pretty weird but that was normal artistic clothing back then.

@Pus_N_Pecans

What do you think of Devilman Crybaby on Netflix. I can't find the answer online but certain scenes feel like they were animated by the people that made Mind Game.

I've watched 3 episodes. A lot of the animation is very crude.

I haven't watched it yet, but I know it's directed by Masaaki Yuasa, who did indeed do Mind Game as well. I plan on checking it out soon. I've been meaning to see more of his stuff for a while now. So far all I've seen is Mind Game, his part in Genius Party, and his short, Kick Heart. I hear Kaiba in particular, is phenomenal.

I watched the first two episodes of Devilman Crybaby now. It seems interesting enough where I'll probably see it through to the end, but I'm a bit bothered by just how explicit the sexual stuff is. I think all of Yuasa's stuff has a certain sexual element to it, but it's usually more abstract about it; here it feels borderline pornographic. I dunno. Maybe I'll come back once I watch some more.

Ninja Scroll

Considering that it's widely watched and cited -- despite being the anime equivalent of a so-so- action film -- it seems over-appreciated if anything. It's often mentioned in the same breath as Akira and Ghost in the Shell.
