I never heard of "tonton macoute" as anything criminal until I played Mafia 3 literally last weekend.

The only other time I've heard of it is as the name of that really friggin' amazing album by Johnny Jenkins (Ton-Ton Macoute!). That is a really underrated album. So anyway it's kind of surprising to me that the name of this album shares the name with some criminal organization.
