http://www.stltoday.com/lifestyles/faith-and-values/christian-america-dwindling-including-white-evangelicals-study-shows
The future of religion in America is young, non-Christian and multicolored.

Almost every Christian denomination in the U.S. shows signs of growing diversity as white Christians, once the majority in most mainline Protestant and Catholic denominations, give way to younger members, who tend to be of different races, according to a study released Wednesday by the Public Religion Research Institute.

And American evangelicals once seemingly immune to the decline experienced by their Catholic and mainline Protestant neighbors are losing numbers and losing them quickly.

Americans also are continuing to move away from organized religion altogether, as atheists, agnostics and those who say they do not identify with any particular religion the group known as the nones hold steady at about one-quarter (24 percent) of the population.

Meh, another religion will just take its place. It might not even be one that exists yet.

Good luck with that. I bet there will be robots practicing religion 10,000 years from now when they start philosophizing about their purpose in the universe.

More of our kids than not are biracial. It's not a decline in religion. America's culture is shifting and its religion is coinciding. Faith in God and Christ will be here long after white people are no longer the majority in the US.

Slightly related, according to Pew Research Center, religious aspects of Christmas are declining:

http://www.pewforum.org/2017/12/12/americans-say-religious-aspects-of-christmas-are-declining-in-public-life/
Not only are some of the more religious aspects of Christmas less prominent in the public sphere, but there are signs that they are on the wane in Americans private lives and personal beliefs as well. For instance, there has been a noticeable decline in the percentage of U.S. adults who say they believe that biblical elements of the Christmas story that Jesus was born to a virgin, for example reflect historical events that actually occurred. And although most Americans still say they mark the occasion as a religious holiday, there has been a slight drop in recent years in the share who say they do this.

America's culture has always been one of change. One which takes many cultures and mixes them together to create a unique one. To some older Americans this is scary as their idea of the American culture is changing before their eyes.

Are we going to discount that some of the rabid Christians continue to kill their own religion?

The ones who are anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-science, and more aren't exactly drawing in the younger crowd, many of whom regard the rabid Christians as psychos.

It's the diehards that are actually retaining more active membership as I recall, and the moderate sects/denominations are the ones hemorrhaging members. Though I reckon that can be traced towards the additional social/familial pressures put into place within the fundamental/overly zealous branches that eventually become core programming within the individual.

I don't think it's so much that Christianity is the problem as it is not being educated and learning critical thinking skills and having compassion or empathy for the fellow man.

And those last two have been a dwindling commodity in some churches as of late.

The more educated people get, the more civilized we get as a society, and and the more we understand things we previously didn't have the education or resources to understand, the less likely we are to base it on the flying spaghetti monster in the sky.

That said, I also don't see theism as this evil cancer like many do. Like many issues in life, I feel like education, critical thinking skills, and tolerance are key.
While I'm an atheist myself, I've volunteered at a ministry for some time and have seen many positive impacts from religion for certain people. They're also aware of my lack of belief and treat me just like everyone else with respect and kindness.

Christianity has been in decline since the turn of the 20th century and pointed out by one of the most notable philosophers, Nietzsche, of our time. This is not new, this is redundant.

I'd bet a lot of those are just people saying they're Christian because their family is Christian or were raised Christian but don't follow Christianity or go to church that much, if ever. Probably a lot of "Easter and Christmas" Christians too.
