Zhong Hui and Guan Xing* both use the new Fan Sword. It's a weapon that was introduced with Cao Xiu.

As for clones, I'm okay with them holding off for XL. I'm just glad they're finally expanding and improving upon the core game. I've got more than 200 hours in DW8, but I just can't go back to it and play for more than a few hours these days.

Plus, it's easier to add content than it is to revamp an existing game.

^Yeah, chances are he'll be decloned in Empires or at the latest, DW10. I highly doubt he'll be priority for XL or even post-launch DLC.

she's played a musou game before (we got the platinum in pirate warriors 3), but I want to convince her that this game might be a good co-op game for when we are laying in bed before we sleep

Well, unfortunately co-op probably isn't a thing in this game. They ruled out online and were entertaining the idea of local co-op(they were having issues), but we haven't heard anything since.

As for the open world, they've been releasing small video clips showing off various scenery, but today they released a video showing civilians and their behaviour:

Yep, I'm loving the designs this time around. 8 did the same thing to a lesser extent and I think that had, overall, better designs than this game.

Also, that trailer makes castles look worse than they are. When information about the game first started coming out, there were multiple showcases up 40 min long and castle battles were the central focus.

Yeah, it's a little surprising. It's gotten the axe in the spinoffs, but this is a pretty big first for the main series; especially since with all the stigma surrounding the series, DW has at least managed to maintain its image as one of THE go-to couch co-op games.

But I can also see why it'd be hard to implement. There'd be a lot to render on two screens at once.

Who knows? Maybe they'll get it working for one of the expansions or DW10. We at least know they were working on it and technically, it hasn't been officially ruled out. We just haven't heard anything for the last 3-4 months and the last bit we did hear wasn't optimistic.

This may just be my first pre-order for the Bone.

I'd get it on Xbox, but I'm not optimistic about it getting any of the inevitable expansions.

Rather than trying to keep track of every individual character, I'm come to just only focus on the particular event happening right now and grabbing a character's wiki page if it feels like I'm missing something important.

Only Warriors/Musou games I've played are Hyrule Warriors, and I got Fire Emblem Warriors for Christmas, though I've been out of town and haven't had much time to play it. I'm kinda interested in playing the series proper, but idk. Think this would be a good place to jump in? >_>

Almost all Musou games are very similar at their core(especially the newer games), but it's the subtle differences that makes or breaks them.

Even in spite of the changes to the combat, I feel pretty confident in saying that it'll feel pretty similar to the more recent games. I haven't played HW or FEW, but they remind me a bit of the other Warriors spinoffs I have played.

The big question for DW9 isn't the combat, but how everything else is handled, such as the open world.

If you liked the combat and general of HW and FEW, then I have little question that will be an issue for you in DW9. It's just a matter of whether or not the characters, setting, or open world format appeals to you, because in regards to the latter, you'll be going in as blind as the rest of us.
