Poll of the Day > Holy shit, my parents are getting me a new car

So my younger brother just crashed his car last week (he's fine). Completely totaled, would cost more than the car itself to fix, so my parents just sold it for scrap.

I drive a 2007 Honda Fit. My older brother has a 2011 Hyundai Accent.

My older brother first got the 2007 Fit "brand" new (it had like 2-3k miles on it). He then got the Hyundai when he moved, so the Fit was passed down to me.

With the loss of my younger brother's car, he naturally needs a replacement. So my parents' thought process was, hey, Muffinz0rz has never actually gotten a chance to get a new car (unlike older brother), as all he's had are hand-me-downs, and he's been a model child (worst offenses are speeding tickets, gainfully employed, no longer a dependent on parents since graduation, renowned GameFAQs shitposter), so let's take the Fit for the younger brother and get him something new! (because I've treated the Fit with dignity and it's still running smooth as silk even at 95k miles).

The few suggestions they threw up were a brand new 2017 Fit, 2017 Hyndai Elantra, or potentially a new Civic or Accord (basically starting with brands we know work, given the success with the 2007 Fit and the 2011 Hyundai).

Thoughts? I'm thinking brand new Fit. I mean, why fix what ain't broke?

I'd go with the civic. I'm not a fan of civics, but of those options, it's the best one.

see if you can try a VW Golf. seems like about the only modern car that isn't some bulky overstylized blob and is reportedly pretty fun to drive.

Interesting. What differentiates it from prior options?

I'd go with the civic. But the Accord is good as well.

My father is a mechanic.

He says hondas are invincible. lol (they last long)

The Civic looks more sporty in my opinion.

I'd vote Civic. Dependable and easily the best looking of the options (imo).

I was gonna say for you, I would stick with the fit. Your used to it and owner a newer model of a car is amazing. Now I would say for looks alone go for a Honda civic. It also has better gas mileage. So If you want something different get the civic but if you want to stay with what you know and used too but upgraded and better in everyway, then get another fit.

I had a few Hondas, but I have a Nissan Altima 2-door coupe now and really like it.

I've learned you get what you pay for with a vehicle. My entry-level ones had more problems than the higher tier ones as I tend to keep cars a long time.

Hmm, Civic or Fit.

Interestingly enough, the look of the Civic is actually what concerns me. It just looks so...generic? That's not to say it looks bad, but it looks like any other car, whereas the Fit has its own cute little style that I do love.

I'm doing some test driving today. Will report back. Maybe a dark horse candidate will emerge.

Although I'm personally an American car guy (my daily driver is a 420+RWHP American muscle car), it's definitely true that Asian vehicles seem to last forever. I've worked on cars most of my life, and I've seen Honda's running into the 300,000 mile range on a factory engine and transmission (although with new timing belt of course and things like that.) I would never ever drive an American car at 300,000 miles.

Can't go wrong with a civic or fit. As for looking generic... you're getting a free car. Either should last you for years, hell maybe even the rest of your life.

Hondas are awesome. The Hyundai would've been my choice if I was getting gifted though, especially the Genesis coupe

Got back from the test drive not too long ago. Drove a Civic and Fit (time constraints prevented going to the Hyundai dealer too).

Call it bias from nearly 10 years of driving a Fit, but it just feels so much smaller and more familiar than the civic. Bright side too is, pricewise, a stripped down Civic is comparable to a Fit "EX" (which is a nicer model with better technology). So by sticking with the Fit, I get some fun toys to go with it.

Back at our respective places, doing some shopping around. Last day of the year, I'd imagine some of the sales guys would be keen on huge discounts for new cars.

Dad's best offer so far is $18k (after tax and any additional fees) for a brand new 2018 Fit EX. I went to two different dealers and couldn't get below $19k because the markup for the Fit is like, a $400 difference, whereas it's in the thousands for other cars.

I'm so stoked.

CVT

EX-L was another step up from EX and cost another 2 grand or so, but the only real improvements were leather seating, heated seats, and heated side mirrors. Not worth it, IMO.

I dont know. Depending how clean you are leather seating is a must have for me because I work outside and cloth seats always got so dirty and hard to clean.

Funny thing is, my younger brother (the one who crashed the car) is actually getting an upgrade -- he crashed like a 2004 Acura something and is being rewarded with an '07 Fit.

tbf if I buy something that I already owned before I tend to upgrade as I hate buying the same thing more than once in most cases.

My family isn't rich but they bought my bro 3 cars. A '96 Monte Carlo then I got the Monte Carlo after they bought a VW Jetta. His buddy crashed it twice and my brother crashed once. They sold it because it had issues obviously. Then bought him a shitty jeep for 9k that wasn't worth that much. He sold the Jeep and bought my parents '07 Impala from them. Meanwhile after a drunk girl hit my car and totaled it my parents said I had to buy my own which was fine because I'd been saving my money since 16.

I get that sometimes. More often than not though, I'm a fan of sticking in my comfort zone, instead of branching out into Kia or Mazda or something and ending up with a slew of issues.
