Current Events > Spiderman Homecoming was so much better than the 2 movies that came out before

it that I wasn't even bothered by its flaws on the first watch through, though I felt their presence.

However on rewatches, they are starting to get to me.

Spiderman now has a rich billionaire backer so... can he still be classic down-on-his-luck-constantly spiderman which is basically a huge part of his character and part of his endearing character trait? Now he has a high tech full of gadgets suit and basically is lapping it up. Having Iron Man to bail him out any time kinda reduces any stakes that may be presented. Though that's the trouble with Marvel having literally ALL of its superheroes in NYC (like really, even FF which Disney by all accounts probably owns, are based in nyc)

The side characters have some pretty uneven casting. You have the younger hot may, and then you have the fat sidekick of peter's. You have the unbelievably gorgeous and sweet Liz Allen who isn't in the movie nearly enough... and you have the bizarrely cast "preppy gets thrown in the garbage can by other kids" flash thompson who we're supposed to buy as a bully instead of the douche everyone at school ignores and actual bullies tear apart like toilet paper.

Michael Keaton is great, and way more terrifying as mk than as vulture. Par for the course, it seems every spiderman movie has to have these nifty little coincidences in casting, like how fitting it is that michael keaton is playing another bird themed character.

And let's not forget the original character they created who replaces liz allen as head club leader or something, that grungy look girl which the studio for some reason gives the moniker of the most well known love interest of spiderman history? Not sure what that's about.

And tom holland is so much better than the garbage actor they chose in those previous 2 movies that I initially looked past some flaws, like how selfish the dude is without the movie really acknowledging it since he still gets his way throughout the movie with no repercussions. In particular it's noticeable in how lacking the supposedly most important moment of the movie is in the scene where he gets stuck under a pile of rubble and has to lift his way out? There's no real stakes, drama or oomph because it's lacking an emotional element. It's why the old comic book movies made it more personal by having him rescue someone close to him, like family or a love interest. Without that, he's just whiny and then all of a sudden musters the strength to lift up the pile of rubble. The comics did that scene better, if nothing else.

Overall it's great but the little things are what really pick at the movie and bring it down.

I just saw Iron Man Jr. yesterday and didn't enjoy it. Felt like a Disney Channel flick.

He's a more believable modern bully, not a 50s bully. "Gimme your lunch money" types went out 30 years ago man.

The only gripe I truly have with Homecoming is that awful Zendaya girl. Even if their intent was just to pay homage to the actual Mary Jane, they really, really messed it up.

Are you talking about MJ? She doesn't replace Liz Allen.

Yes he is. He's popular at school, and rallies people to make fun of Peter, successfully.

The grungy looking girl, you know the one that becomes team captain of the mathletes (or whatever they are) after Liz Allen leaves?

Just googled, Michelle. That's the name they gave her.

You can't say modern bully and expect us to believe everyone thinks "penis" is a good insult, and expect us to believe anyone loses to this dork who clearly seems like a case of daddy bought his way in what with the car and him getting every answer wrong in the tournament and almost bumped. It also doesn't seem like peter is being made fun of at all, everyone just sorta ignore him. I know it's supposedly a special school, like maybe one of those advanced sciences type of school. Which would only further remove the believability of that guy as anything even resembling a bully rather than a fly that you swat away.

Also him being 15 is still way too unbelievable. I mean he doesn't have to be in the last year of high school again but at least 16, 16 is the youngest I'd be willing to suspend my disbelief. 15 is a child, and considering civil war took place months prior, tony basically brought in a recently turned 15 year old to a big brawl fight with super powered individuals? That retroactively makes civil war even worse than it originally was. And Tony way way more than a hypocrite than he already was in cw.

My only problem was the cast and Iron Man stuff you talked about. Race swapping usually makes my vagina a little sandy but changing pretty much every supporting characters race and also changing most of their actual characterizations is super obnoxious. I'm hoping they can salvage some of them later on. Same with Iron Mans suit. I'm hoping after the fallout of Infinity War he's either dead or Spider-Man wants to do his own thing and makes his own suit without all the tech.

Er how does their race serve any impact on them one way or the other, it's only characterization that should matter, which as noted is extremely, extremely poor, from the friend/sidekick to the "bully" aka the douche that parker could have shoved into a locker pre spider bite and who was already his intellectual superior pre-powers
