Today's poll features a question based around 'the holidays'.

Why can't they just come out and call it Christmas?

Countries and cultures that don't celebrate Christmas don't have any holidays this time of year, so if they're afraid of offending anyone, what about the poor working joe with no holiday?
Even their personal message collecting power moons or whatever avoids using the word. What is the alternate name for the 25th December for them? Holi-Day? (Which comes from holy day)

It just makes me smile how catered the site is towards America. The systems and games have American names first, the competitions are run only in America, and yet they can't call the holiday by it's name in America. Seriously what does this site call easter? Chocolate Egg day?

I'd say the same thing if this website was in China and celebrated a generic name for Chinese New Year.

I guess it's to avoid all the negative stigma surrounded by the name Christmas, because if they use it they must be Jesus freaks eh?

China has no notable December holidays. <_<

Like I said though this site celebrates Thanksgiving and Halloween, both strong American holidays, not general world 'October holidays' so it seems like a double standard. Oh but when it comes to Christmas in December suddenly they're a world site and need to show respect to all holidays worldwide.

There are cultures within the US that don't celebrate halloween either, yet the site still celebrates it.

Maybe you really don't understand my point at all, or see where I'm coming from. Even Xmas holidays would be a recognition of the biggest holiday in America. I mean it did polls and stuff for the 4th of July, and that's probably more polarizing than Christmas.

More accurately, there are cultures within the US that celebrate December holidays other than Christmas. It's not just not celebrating Christmas, it's that they've got their own major holidays going on.

On the 25th of december? Good Governance day? Constitution day?

You're missing my point. What about when Ramadan falls in October? Does the site say happy holidays then for all the different cultural holidays going on around october? No, they openly celebrate halloween. There are a lotof other holidays on October 31 also, yet no one complains about their exclusion. There are other holidays on the 4th of July, yet no one complains when gamefaqs doesn't mention them.

It really does seem a desire not to offend by stating Christmas as a whole.

I apologise if i seem like I'm trying to troll or bash people over the head or appear overly patriotic, I'm not. I just think it is an issue worth talking about. We can be sure that New Years Eve will be publicly named here on this website. But not Christmas.

Not nearly as big of a deal as most cultures' december holidays are. Compare NYE to Christmas, to contextualize it with your own practices.

I understand what you are saying, and it seems others view me as whiny and annoying so I'll make this the last post. Valentine's day, halloween, thanksgiving, July 4th, Chinese New Year, and various other holidays are mentioned by name throughout the year by the website. Christmas and Easter are not.

Perhaps it's a genuine attempt by the staff to cover all December holidays (except NYE which gets its own mention), something they don't do for other months. Maybe december is just so jam packed with important holidays that they have to name them all under the holiday season. Although I could argue other cultures have more important holidays at other times of the year, maybe december is the time when all cultures and holidays come together under the 'holiday season' banner.

But it seems a little suspect to me, intentional rather than coincidental.

Anyway, I don't think I can elaborate my point any further, some here feel I was stupid to even raise this as a topic so that's all I have to say.

Don't try to tell me that decorating a big tree with mistletoe and holly during the Winter Solstice isn't nature worship. Christmas is easily lumped in with all the other Winter Solstice celebrations.
Especially since early Christianity specifically hopped on that bandwagon so that their new holiday would gain traction more easily. No backsies!

Seriously what does this site call easter? Chocolate Egg day?

The Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal Equinox... could just call it an Equinox celebration.
Thus the rabbit, eggs, and other fertility celebrations to welcome Spring.

Your holidays really aren't unique. They're celebrations for things that nearly every human culture in history has celebrated. Instead of listing all of them by name, it's easier to group them by occasion.

The poll today names Christmas, and it's Christmas, not xmas or holiday.

I can admit I was wrong.

This topic doesn't need to stay open any longer. I will close it as soon as.

Although, it is surprising how not one person here argued that they might refer to it in a poll like my July 4th argument earlier. Instead they were all trying to justify the site's seemingly refusal to refer to the day 'Christmas', as some super sensitive choice by the staff.

But rather than both sides reflecting, I'm sure people will reply with 'lol we had no problem in the 1st place, ur the one making the topic' or they'll just read the first post without seeing the resolution here.

Oh well. I was wrong in my estimation and making mistakes is how I learn.

It was actually a pagan holiday called Samhain first. Plus most of the practices associated with it had nothing to do with religion. It's a secular holiday. Granted, Christmas is pretty secular now, too. And yeah, it's stupid that people say Halloween -- which is probably less widely celebrated -- but not Christmas.
