Board 8 > What's up with TitS?

It seems like the latest B8-thing to be popular here, yet all I think I know about it is that there's a lot of content to play with and people are excited when it's talked about. Think there's also role-playing elements with TitS...? Honestly not sure, but that's sounds fun.

I don't want to search by myself and come all across TitS too soon though -- you know how the internet is about endings -- so like, what do ya'll like about TitS?

just a good all-around JRPG. endearing characters, solid writing/world-building, solid combat (it's turn-based but positioning on the battlefield also matters, so you can try and catch multiple enemies in AoE or stay out of range of an enemy's melee), a materia-esque character skill system

yeah I haven't been able to tell what makes this game good. there doesn't seem to be one particular feature, like Xenoblade's exploration or Persona's progression or Tales's battle system. I'm guessing it's just got charm.

I would say the battle system lends itself much better to boss fights than random battles on the whole (though 3rd is much better about those so far imo), but otherwise yeah the battle system isn't that great. It's not terrible either though, especially with turbo mode now in the game.

But the character and world building is excellent, and the plot is very compelling if maybe not spectacular.

imo there isn't any particular feature that stands out. but everything is well-done. it's not like, say, FF7 where I say "I love the story/characters BUT they're made of Lego." or Transistor where I say "I love the aesthetic BUT I wish the story were less fragmented and piecemeal." there's no "but ___" with Trails, it's all good

I don't like the legend of heroes series very much at all.

It just tries to do too many different things without actually doing anything well, or even being all that interesting. and the pacing is absolutely atrocious.

It's got fantastic worldbuilding with the best-written NPCs I've ever seen. I think that's just a part of what makes it special, adding to a charm unique to the game. You can feel how much love was put into it. The world seems alive and joyful and worth protecting. I fell in love with the game not during some amazing plot event or love for the battle system but when two of the characters just were having a nice picnic together.

Have we almost reached the critical mass? Has lefty and icon's plan finally entered its next stage?

I think the most concurrent playthrough topics we've had was 3, though I can only remember up to two. Right now we've got Shad and VI. Be the next.

Almost done with 6-1 in PW:SoJ and was just gifted Hollow Knight and Typoman, so not soon...! I am scouting in this topic for maybe later after that though.

The first one was pretty mediocre but laid the groundwork well enough. Plan to continue, but don't know when. Combat is honestly just miserable. I played on PSP though, and I hear PC has it way better.

PC is way better by virtue of a Turbo Mode that speeds things up considerably.

FC definitely has the worst combat of the three. It starts off standard but really slow, gets okay around chapter 2 or 3, then devolves into an AoE spam fest for the last few chapters and all of the best AoE have long animations (turbo mode helps this a lot).

SC fixes that to an extent for the majority of the game by better balancing the enemies. It still kind of becomes an AoE spam fest toward the end though.

3rd I've had no problems with so far combat wise and I'm pretty sure I'm getting near the end (I'm on chapter 6). Much better designed combat.

All of this just applies mostly to random battles though. I've never had a problem with the bosses. Some of the harder ones are even quite tactical.

Cold Steel can get real silly as you could set yourself up in a way where you can kill bosses without them taking a single turn via delay cheese.
