Because pikachu is the mascot of pokemon, and he has been on the show since the beginning. He has never talked before so it's a big deal for those who care, I guess. I remember reading a really lengthy thread on reddit where some guy claimed that part of the movie not only ruined it, but the entire franchise. And he was serious about it too.
