Hmm. He committed treason against the state. He's actually lucky he didn't get executed.

In 1979, only three years after joining the FBI, Hanssen approached the Soviet GRU and offered his services

How do people even do this? I always pictured it like Burn After Reading where they just randomly walked into the Russian embassy and said they had information.

People like this they should just kill.

Solitary for that long is inhumane and its such a waste of resources to keep him alive.

Im reminded of those three men who were in solitary confinement from the early 70s until relatively recently. A year or two ago, I think. I remember reading an article about it.

I cant imagine, and Im fucking glad I cant.

If he knew what it meant to be in indefinite solitary, he wouldn't have.

Good lord, and all he got was 1.4 mil in cash and diamonds over 22 years for his treason. Thats barely even 63K per year!

If youre gonna put your life on the line selling out your country to its biggest enemy, you should at least be getting PAID for it. Smh

For comparison's sake, 63k in like 1989 would be worth about 128k in today's economy. Also cost of living was probably lower back then.

True, but for such extreme-risk, high level espionage, Id be expecting more like a million per year (in todays money)

Over the span of many, many years, he disclosed information about FBI counter-intelligence activities (including wiretapping and surveillance), suspected KGB intelligence officers, double-agent lists (resulting in assets being executed), etc.

solitary confinement is fine for people who commit treason.

During his first espionage cycle, Hanssen told the GRU a significant amount, including information on the FBI's bugging activities and lists of suspected Soviet intelligence agents. His most important leak was the betrayal of Dmitri Polyakov, a CIA informant who passed enormous amounts of information to American intelligence while he rose to the rank of General in the Soviet Army

I wouldn't call that "lucky." I think most people would rather be executed than locked in room alone for 16 years.
