DDR was fun. I got a heck of a workout doing that. Not to mention you'd get an audience when you played Heavy, even if you couldn't AAA anything. And used the bar.

We just opened up an arcade a few weeks ago. I still haven't been there, but I can't wait to check it out sometime. It has one of those rare 6-player X-Men cabinets.

Arcades in the US have pretty much distilled down to 1) Dave and Busters and 2) serious enthusiasts who run their own places, and I mean *serious* enthusiasts. You can't go half-measure on arcades anymore or else you'll end up with busted machines in the corner of your janky business that no one cares to fix.

While I appreciate Dave and Busters for trying to keep the dream alive, the whole setting seems way too... manufactured and "corporate" for me. No fighting games, largely ticket-spitters. Props for getting new games (I did appreciate the opportunity to play Star Wars: Battle Pod), but their pricing system is so damn obtuse that it's easy to not realize you're getting taken for a massive ride every time you swipe your card.

As for enthusiast locations, naturally they're very specific to region. I'm oddly lucky living in New Hampshire because there are multiple places for me to try. Funworld in Nashua, NH is a good quick stopover for a fix, although it's really starting to fall apart in the last few years. There's also the Pinball Wizard arcade in Pelham, with a rather large collection of pinball, but also plenty of classic games as well. It was nice to see just a line of Capcom fighters in order of release.

Lastly there's Funspot in Laconia, which is the home of the ACAM, the American Classic Arcade Museum. Dude, if you want to find some old-ass games that are running fine, you go here. And I mean OLD-ASS. Like SEVENTIES. It's a giant collection, and most of the games suck by nature, but it's still cool to see them.

EDIT: Oh yeah, DDR. The second subject of this topic. So, you can pretty easily find DDR in any Dave and Busters. Last one I went to (in Braintree, MA) had a DDR A machine, which is the DDR that came out in 2016. They added a few extra "Western" songs that the Asian versions didn't get initially, such as Happy, Shut Up and Dance, Time Of Our Lives, so clearly support is happening.

I always light up on the rare occasion I see a DDR machine. They used to be everywhere you went, but they're so rare nowadays.

The budget theatre near me actually has a DDR Extreme machine. I'm confident I could still rock most songs on heavy after all these years, if not for the fact that the pads are probably busted all to hell and every second step would be a miss or something.

If arcades "needed" to come back then people would be going to them now. But no one does.

I'm guessing most gamers under the age of maybe 28 or so never really had arcades as a social thing that you went to regularly with your friends, and will view paying money to have a single go of a game as a ridiculous concept.

I'm lucky to have a house with a big basement so I'm working on building half of it into my own arcade

I've got a decent selection of games so far.

There's one in my town that I haven't been to yet. They charge a flat fee (I don't remember what... 5 or 10 probably) and you can play as much as you want.

I actually owned an arcade cabinet once. It was some multi-game thing I converted into a MAME cab and sold when I realized it was way too big and I didn't like standing up.

My friend has one, which I love. It's kind of massive, though. But if I had money to blow, I'd get something like this from polyarcade

Arcade Bars have been getting bigger. They seem to be a real big hit wherever they open. So yes arcades are making a bit of a comeback.

Barcades are really popular around here. Just pay 5 bucks and get unlimited play on all cabinets while you get drunk.

that is PIU, not DDR.

Still though....I wasn't good at PIU...You had to enter a code to change BPM speed.

Also...and still IS fun. right now I play stepmania keyboard.

I still remember when Fascination MAXX was the stage to beat...now you got this....

the current hardest DDR chart in the world:

the round that won chris4life the championship, and 2nd hardest in the world...now just discovered that a L19 has been PFCed for the first time.

It took a while for me to get used to PIU from DDR, but I can say I'm much better at PIU than DDR because it feels more natural doing fast songs. I play most songs on 3x speed. Most songs I play are around 13-14 difficulty. I hope to be able to do some 15s by the end of January.
