And he has been there about four years longer than me. I feel bad because I like him and consider him a friend, and now hes basically not talking to me after finding out. He told another guy he was going to quit and I really hope he doesnt because hes really good at his job and we would all miss him.

But at the same time I am better. I have a better attitude, work harder, come in early every day and leave after him every day. I deserve the promotion and I dont feel bad about getting it. I just feel bad that hes not happy about not getting it.

My solution: kill that mother fucker with kindness. Gonna buy him a Christmas present. Make him be friends with me! Then it wont be so weird when Im his boss. Hopefully.

You can't fault him for wanting to quit if he feels he doesn't have an upward trajectory within the organization. He might be able to get the promotion bump he'd like by switching companies.

Pretty much. This is actually a very good reason for him to quit (after lining up something else of course), as he has now effectively been told that he's not moving up in this company.

Yea.

However, I've always disliked the attitude of people who think they deserve the promotion over anyone else and think that it's already set in stone that they will get it.

Kitchen manager. We work at a high end steak house and we make good hourly money, but thisll be salary plus vacation plus bonuses plus great health insurance.. my current kitchen manager is going to regional director and he chose me as his replacement. RCtheWSBC posted...

I dont fault him for wanting to quit. I just dont want him to resent me for it. Its not my fault. I am better than him and everybody knows that, except him. He makes good money and hes single and has no kids so hes doing fine. I dont think hell be able to find anything better, but if he can more power to him.

I wish we could be co kitchen managers like on the office, but thats not a thing.

No.

He isn't moving up in the company because he isn't putting in the effort required for the promotion. You aren't owed a promotion just for sticking around long enough. And you know what's going to happen at his next job? There will be another MICHAELCOLE who is better and more willing to put in the effort for the promotion.

I understand this, and I'm definitely not saying that TC didn't deserve his promotion either. I can't speak to the other employee's work ethic and shit other than what we've been told, but some people do end up switching companies because of lack of growth.

I agree with this. first job I ever got a promotion at, I had only been there a year. there was a chick who had been there 9 years and never had even gotten so much as a raise. she was just a mediocre employee that was only worth keeping around because she showed up for work and did the bare minimal required to not get canned.

Hate people like that, i had the same when i was asked to take over a problem branch. The deputy had an obvious vendetta as he thought he would automatically get the position. I tried to make it work but ended up having to demote him, then shipped him off to another branch where he was subsequently fired for committing fraud. I wouldn't have minded so much if i just pipped him at the post for the position but he was fucking terrible at the job and lazy as hell, the only reason he had the position he had was because they were desperate to fill it and he was the first to say yes.

He even had the audacity to ask me for a reference after all was said and done.

Don't worry about your colleague. His ego is bruised. That's all. Hopefully, in time, when he realises WHY he didn't get the promotions and see his shortcomings, he'll come around.

Very true.

Promotions aren't owed to any employee by the company simply because of their tenure. Everyone needs to earn it.

And people who cry about being passed over for someone else are extremely vexing. They really need to look into themselves rather than their competition on why they didn't get promoted. I dislike people who project their lack of success on others and cocoon themselves in the mentality of blaming everyone else except themselves. Quite childish and unprofessional.

My uncle got burned really, really bad by this. One of those things you expect to happen to someone else.

He was in IT-- and he's a classy dude. Very polite, professional, and corrected his boss on something in private, not in front of anyone, about something IT related and presented an alternative solution as an idea.

His boss basically hired a sneaky slut to come in and say she got a new dress in front of him and asked if he thought it looked nice. He nodded and kinda implied like "sure, yeah, whatever" and after 25 yrs of working for them, he was accused of sexual harassment and promptly fired.

I trust him. He has a wife he's crazy about, 2 girls in college, and although his religion isn't my thing, Catholic. I have no reason to believe he wasn't being truthful when he told us what happened. Class act, nothing less. He got burned.
