If you don't really do anything, 56k is good. If you watch any sort of video you'll want at least 1Mb if you don't want any buffering.

It would help if you told us what you use the net for, IE streaming, gaming, etc. Also, how many people will be using it?

Yeah sorry.

Just for me. I don't really play online games much anymore. From what I'm thinking my biggest use would probably be downloading games that I play single player from Steam. And whatever DRM Steam and Battle.net have going on. I guess the occasional online game. :/

How good is "Up to 75 Mbps?" It doesn't look like I can go faster without ditching TV or adding a landline.

Depends what the minimum is.

I have only 30 Mbps and it's fine and super fast for anything I need. Which is the occasional software download, Netflix, and some online gaming. Faster would be nice but I wouldn't really get any benefit from it outside of downloading somewhat faster: on a conventional hard drive the drive is a bottleneck before that kind of speed is.

Okay. Well it's Comcast so I'm sure they'd screw me with the minimum but I do have a conventional hard drive.

75 is more than enough. If you can get less with a better price I'd do that.

even if the minimum is 10 Mbps it would still be totally usable.

I actually bought this house over the summer, I haven't moved in yet. I will eventually. I only got Internet because my dad is staying there for a couple weeks and he asked if I could get it.

Just divide X Mbps by 10 and you'll get the approximate real download speed. e.g. 10 Mbps (megaBITS) is 1mb (megaBYTE) per seconds download speed/bandwidth.

So, 75 Mbps is roughly 7.5 MB per second.

Edit:-
If you use it for mainly downloads, you will want your Mbps to be as high as possible. If you use it for gaming, you will want a connection with the lowest ping. These two stats can sometimes be mutually exclusive, i.e having a high Mbps does NOT always mean you'll have a low ping. I had a 100m connection that give me 700ms ping playing overwatch while my new 20m connection give me a super smooth 30ms ping.

One company could be infringing on net neutrality laws while the other doesn't, shameless plug: fight for net neutrality.

once you get beyond a certain point (~50Mb?), really all it does it is save a bit of time when downloading.

Or you could divide by 8 and get the exact speed. 75Mbps is just over 8.1MBps.

This.

Even 5 or 10 is "good enough" for netflix, unless you have a crippling allergy to occasional mpeg artifacting.
