Granted, if you don't like Trump, it probably would have preempted Trump because he would have had the party nod for 2016 with Ryan as the likely frontrunner in 2020. While Trump could have still tried in 2020, that'd be a kinda uphill battle. Not impossible, mind you, because Ryan would still be seen as establishment and the Romney presidency would have only been slightly better than Obama's second term.
