Such an outstanding movie that's probably not going to fare too well at the box office. It's one of the best of the year, in my opinion.

I would say that it even blows Pan's Labyrinth (wait for it)....

What's it about?

A mute woman that works at a government facility during the Cold War hooks up with with a top secret fish man that kind of looks like Abe Sapien from Hellboy (same actor).

How much of a love story is it? Guillermo is my favorite director but I'm not into romance at all. I think it detracts from movies tbh.

It's about a girl fucking a fish, if that's too romantic for you

Species doesn't matter. Is it sappy? Or is there intrigue outside of their romance?

The movie have a little bit of everything actually.
At its heart, it's this twisted little romance story but there's a nice blend of some action, comedy (way more funny than I thought it would be going in), personal and political drama and of course, the fantastical edge Del Toro is known for.

I thought it was really well done. Just like Pan's Labyrinth (which it feels like a spiritual successor of in some ways), the movie ends leaving potential aspects of the main character left up to interpretation, so there's probably more going on with their relationship than we know.

There was one particular scene that was a bit weird and off putting (which is funny considering the whole premise of the movie). You'll know exactly what I'm talking about when you see it.

Since the Mouse pretty much owns Twentieth Century Fox/Fox Searchlight now, this movie is technically a Disney fairy tale!

Not better than Pan's Labyrinth.

Michael Shannon was the best character for me.

It looked like Oscar bait to me so I ignored it, the stupid title especially threw up a flag, like somebody trying to be deep.

I feel like there were some beats that were definitely inspired by Pan in the same vein to how that movie was inspired by Del Toro's then previous film 'The Devil's Backbone'. But overall, I have to give it to this. I loved pretty much everything about this movie.

I'm not sure if this is a spoiler or not but I'll put it in tags just in case:

No, but there is a pretty funny scene where the main character is trying to describe it to someone via handsigns when they ask how does it work.

What made it funnier is I was repeating the gesture to myself trying to figure it out and the character she was explaining it to did the same thing lol.
