from the social mediaz:

I hope this election turns a critical eye towards the scapegoating of the South, a phenomenon where the South is depicted as a space in which racism and other social problems are regionally confined. In many ways, this scapegoating is required to balance Northern amnesia regarding nation-wide social and racial divides, a dyadic relationship which functions to keep American Exceptionalism afloat. This is to say that the cultural and regional South is often portrayed as the source of the nations social, racial, economic, and academic ills. Through scapegoating and crude stereotypes, the burden has been placed on the regional community of the South to re-brand itself towards a more equal and prosperous future. This is despite the rest of the nation being a bastion of prejudice, racially segregated housing, unemployment, and poverty. Well, here is your proof. Instead of writing off an entire region for their historical sins, why not support the grassroots efforts of the minority communities and the blue dots in the sea of red? Maybe now we can illuminate national hypocrisies regarding those same problematic social structures beyond the Mason-Dixon line.

like, the south is objectively terrible towards minorities and the poor, let's not pretend there is a parity here between the rest of the country and the south w/r/t poverty, unemployment, and prejudice

it is true that there are racial issues every where, but these silly southerners I live with are way too myopic and self-absorbed. its like a reverse beltway bubble

That person has a point. If you stereotyped and ridiculed almost any other group or region the way you guys do with the south, you'd probably be the first to cry bigotry.

The litmus test for you libs is to take any of those sentences you think are acceptable about bashing the south and replace "Alabama" with "Africa" and "southerners" with "blacks." If the edited sentence would bother you, you should probably take pause and stop being a hypocrite.

The south is a lot more diverse than people think or give credit for. There are many people I know in Georgia who were appalled about the Alabama republican candidate, and were happy when he lost. Stereotyping everyone in that region as being the same just makes you the stereotypical "holier than thou" elitist douche.

yes, there is more housing segregation in other areas of the country for two reasons -- the federal government has enforced it more, due to the worse history of discrimination here, and there are larger levels of income and wealth inequality in other areas because the south overall is more likely to be poor. This cuts against her other points about poverty and unemployment -- the reason that one metric looks good is because the other two she points out are so bad, relative to the rest of the country

again, she does have a point, but it is overdetermined here

Exactly. The southern states are much more racially diverse than the liberal coastal states. Here are the U.S. states with the highest percentages of black citizens. Mostly in the south:

1..Mississippi.......1,074,200...37.30%
2..Louisiana.........1,506,534...32.40%
3..Georgia...........3,150,435...31.40%
4..Maryland..........1,798,593...30.10%
5..South Carolina....1,290,684...28.48%
6..Alabama...........1,251,311...26.38%
7..North Carolina....2,048,628...21.60%
8..Delaware............191,814...20.95%
10.Virginia..........1,551,399...19.91%

If you're going to make an argument, at least put some effort into it. If you have more reasoning, explain it. "Look at the number of black people" doesn't explain anything other than the number of black people. Does this mean the rural areas of America are extremely racist since they are heavily white?

That alone isn't any more indicative of diversity than Admiral's numbers about, say, Mississippi being 37% African. Diversity doesn't just mean "less white people".

If you want to get a picture of racial diversity, we'd need to look at a more comprehensive set of figures. If you want to prove him wrong on that, you'd have to show the figures on all of the racial demographics and compare them to his.

This. As someone who's lived in both places, I don't really buy the stereotype that the south is more racist. Up in new england there are a hell of a lot less black and hispanic people, and people out in the country don't seem any different from rural folk down south. Different accent, but that's about it. Saying you're less racist because you don't have any people that look different from you isn't saying much.

All that said, I don't think I've ever been in a "racist" place in my life. Maybe in Asia, but that's not really the same kind of racism that people talk about here. People in small towns have generally been nice and friendly no matter what part of the country I'm in, but maybe it's different if you live there.

This. As someone who's lived in both places, I don't really buy the stereotype that the south is more racist.

Typically it's the rural communities that are more prejudiced in general. Also trailer trash type communities. Albeit, the town I went to college in was small and racism at least didn't seem to be an issue there, but I guarantee it's mostly a Hispanic population. Its also a college town. The white only towns are pretty blatant about being white only.

According to people I've spoken to, Alabama is the reason why the south is still treated like the US' whipping boy. There is still a lot of progress to be made there, but it is getting better. I think this whole topic is proof of that personally.

Please elaborate

The south is a lot more diverse than people think or give credit for

I've lived in San Jose, California, Cabot, Arkansas, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Washington, DC

there are definitely racists in all those places, but you're delusional if you think it's equal. For one thing, to your rural point, the south is much less urbanized than NE overall, though Maine and Vermont are outliers.

Im just still wondering why @The_Admiral assumed this topic was about black people specifically when nothing in the OP suggests that

does it?

I mean yeah Alabama is well-known as being racist towards blacks but in my experience its well-known for being racist against everything else, too

To be fair, when people talk about racism in the Southern US, the face of that topic is overwhelmingly black. Racism against other minority demographics is there, but takes a backseat to racism against blacks.

That's probably because in places like Tennessee Georgia and the like the majority of people are black or white. School I went to didn't have a single asian person and only a couple hispanics but you can damn well bet there is racism against them. Shit I remember hispanics regularly being called the slur that begins with b growning up

not sure what people are discussing in the rest of the topic up until now, but unless I'm missing some key context, that post in italics in the OP is spot on

obviously the rest of the country being a racist shithole doesn't mean the south isn't, but it never claimed otherwise
