I did too. overall, I enjoyed it a lot
my issues with it basically boil down to the new trilogy has basically retconned the feel good-ness of ROTJs ending.
it can still be good, but it did make me feel a little empty because I was hoping that we wouldn't have the new trilogy do the same general idea the old books did

I like TFA and I liked this but they are pretty different from each other. Id say TLJ is less straight-forward.

honestly the movie is pretty good. I can get why people who haven't seen it and are just reading spoilers would go "oh it's terrible" but in the actual movie itself it all works out well on screen

Yes, for now. It's heavily implied that a new generation of Jedi are young and will be trained. The last scene shows a jockey type trainer kid telling a story about Luke before being scattered off by his boss. He then goes to sweep and I'm pretty sure it shows him not grab it but move it with the force to sweep before looking up at a ship going into hyperspace. Basically "burn the past, start a new generation" idea throughout the whole film

I want to be upset about this film retconning the hero's victory to make it something bleak and ruinous, but that's pretty much standard operating procedure at this point.

I hated it when The Mask of Zorro had Diego de la Vega rotting away in prison for 18 years and living only for revenge. I hated it when Batman Beyond had Bruce Wayne as a bitter recluse reflecting on how nothing had changed despite devoting his entire life to crime fighting. I pretty much knew when I saw The Force Awakens that they'd as much as state in the next film that Luke Skywalker hadn't had a happy moment since Return of the Jedi.

Once a successor comes along, instead of allowing the old guard to graciously step aside, they've gotta spell it out that the hero's life has been shit since we last saw them many years earlier. The new hero can have optimism or find their happy ending, but the old hero isn't afforded anything except bitterness and the possible release that accompanies death.

Even the Legend of Zelda timeline does this now. Link becomes a bitter ghost only to be succeeded by... Link.

Are we talking about TFA victory or Original Trilogy victory?

I think not a lot of people realize quite how weak the Rebellion was when they went to Endor. They weren't to the point that the Resistance is portrayed to be in TLJ but it isn't like the Rebellion was a huge massive force. It makes sense that not everything is a-ok in the galaxy after the only thing the Rebellion really did was blow up a few star destroyers and 2 death stars <_< There's still a massive and (unified) enemy left to engage.

I'm sure if Lucas had directed 7-9 we would've gotten vastly different films <_< but for Disney to do what they wanted to do with it, they had to take the canonically sound but less... er... Disney route of everything being okay at the end of RotJ. Hell, in the new EU it's detailed just how much issue the New Republic has getting set up.

Then don't forget that it all gets blown up in TFA

This was my only issue tbh. I know she is force sensitive and all but I wasn't a fan of that. No issues with any of the other major things that happened though.

Loved it. Best film since Empire definitely. It takes risks, there are a lot of plot twists, and it has a really satisfying ending.

RIP Carrie Fisher, too. She has some great moments in this film.

It doesn't have to be a retcon to be a thematic contradiction.

It'd be like if a Rocky sequel had Rocky abusing Adrian. It doesn't retcon the fact that he won the world title. It just changes the audience's perception of who he is as a character. Rocky had anger issues, and athletes are frequently abusive, so this feel-good victory is wasted on a bitter taste of darker realities.

Or maybe we could have a Wizard of Oz followup in which Dorothy is a bitter loner in high school. Why? The whole reason she ran away from home was because her neighbor had a state order allowing her to put Toto down. That wasn't rescinded by the end of the movie, so "There's no place like home" can give way to "When I was 14, the state allowed my neighbor to kill my only real friend and there was nothing I could do about it."

It's pretentious pseudo-nihilistic bullshit.

Return of the Jedi wasn't about a small band of rebels winning a minor victory. It was about a small band of rebels toppling an empire. The New Order or whatever the hell it's called isn't a bad idea, but they should've stuck with the notion that it was something that came about decades later instead of trying to undo the period of victory and sustained peace in the meantime.
