What's influential about Haruhi? Outside of doing the idiocy of Endless Eight, nothing stood out. School based anime, weirdo/hyper main character, straight-laced male character, slice of life dumbassery; typical anime stuff. That can't have been the first.

EVA I can understand to an extent, even if I personally don't find it as interesting as people think it is.

That can't have been the first.

I mean these things did exist but I believe they were much more prominent after Haruhi than they were before.

That statement is based mostly on feeling though I admit, so if someone actually makes like a list of school anime in a similar vein as Haruhi, then that might prove me wrong.

Akira at least for the animation. Like, who else even thought to illustrate lens flare back then?

This, but SAO and Pokemon are "good" picks too.

Did Haruhi influence a lot? I know it was popular but I don't know what it would've inspired.

It started the entire KyoAni thing that we're still dealing with now - do we have interesting plot or character development? No, but will you accept pretty colors and glittering eyeballs?

It's DBZ hands-down. Eva can accept some responsibility as far as style and presentation. Story-wise it has the most 'Impact', har har.

This has been a really good read, thank you guys!

Do any of the works of Miyazaki deserve a spot on the list?

Probably actually.

It's something that's maybe not as obvious to us because I think today his main influence is on anime movies and not as much on TV anime. But I'd definitely say something of his should be up there. He's probably had a reasonable amount of influence even on TV anime at least within the fantasy genre also.

Also in terms of broader cultural impact his movies are still some of the only ones to to gain significant traction outside of Japan, of course.

As a former KyoAni hater, this is BS. They've been putting out great stuff for awhile now.

Haruhi's lasting impact is the blowing up of light novel adaptations, which is huge.

No. Maybe Princess Mononoke? Or Nausicaa? Miyazaki makes really good movies but I hesitate to say they're 'influential' like how DBZ changed things for shonen or Eva ushered in a deconstructionist wave.

So the only reason anyone is giving an answer other than Astro Boy is because it's so obvious that we've all tacitly agreed to debate second place instead, right?

It's debatable if Astroboy the anime is the most impactful of all time. The manga, no, because it's the unquestionable #1.

I guess it depends on what counts kind of influence counts as "impactful". Astro Boy obviously had a huge impact on behind-the-scenes stuff that matters in how TV anime is made (low budgets, limited animation, outsourcing animation due to time constraints, international licensing) and the wave of copycats that followed was literally the birth of the modern anime industry. On the other hand, the actual content of the Astro Boy anime didn't have much of an impact at all.

Examples? I'd genuinely be willing to try KyoAni again if there is something worth watching.
