Denmark?

http://www.worldatlas.com/articles/countries-with-mandatory-military-service.html

How... the fuck... what? Norway is listed as like the most developed country in the world according to the human development index, yet they have something as unethical as mandatory military service. It's unconstitutional in America.

Hell, isn't Switzerland supposed to be neutral? For so called neutrality, they do have something as sketchy as forced military service seen more commonly in places like North Korea, Israel and China, among others.

I think it ironic that in a country so gun loving, military service is not enforced (at least, not anymore I don't believe?) while in a country and region of the world so adamantly against violence and gore, military service is mandatory. Nearly a year of one's life wasted just like that.

Finland has this too. When I played a year of junior hockey over there a lot of the guys were getting ready for conscription. Usually only lasts six months.

Norway's system is really lax, and you can conscientiously object if you so choose. Something like 16% of the people who get called to service every year actually go on to serve.

In Switzerland you can opt instead for civil service which lasts for 340 days. Over 70% of the population voted AGAINST repealing conscription a few years ago, so it's apparently a popular system. They really just do an 18 week long boot camp, and then over the span of ten years do 10 3-week training sessions. ScArY!!

Denmark's mandatory service period is between 4-12 months long. They have a lottery system where if you're physically fit you draw a number, and then if they didn't have enough volunteers that year then you have to serve... in 2014, 19 people were actually compelled to military service because the number of volunteers was so high.

It raises some interesting questions tho. In those countries, everyone is vetted for military service. It can serve as a massive mental health exam for everyone in the country. And they have less crime.

It's not a "waste of a year", it's an opportunity to learn some discipline, acquire a skill or two and get some experience outside of school before moving on with your career.
In Norway's case they basically don't even enforce it even though it's a thing.

I lived in Bolivia for a few months and they used to have 1 year of mandatory service, and it made people tough and street smart. I think it'd be great if the US had 1 year of mandatory service.

My friend told me a story of how they made them survive together in the desert, sleeping in holes and eating birds. They gained mental strength, appreciation for what they have, and lifelong friends

Probably because if these countries dont mandate military service they wouldnt have much of a defense against a possible invasion. The US doesnt need to mandate it since we have had enough volunteers over the years since the Vietnam War not to need a draft.

I'm also really glad we don't have it in the US and I hope we never have it in the US, because there are already too many people who volunteered to do the job and then utterly fail to even try to do the job - that's only going to be compounded by the idea that people are being forced to do the job.

Mandatory service leaves many soldiers far away from any combat. Most of those soldiers serve in the miltary in many different ways that more align with their college courses/career.

I dont think its a bad idea. It would teach people sacrifice and discipline and camaraderie.

I also dont think it could ever work in America.

Its a good thing. It toughens kids up, it only lasts 6 months or a year at max (in Finland at least, which is also thinking of dropping it to like 3 months), they learn some dicipline, get in better shape, learn valuable life skills, earn little bit of money, and mature up.

Its also, possible to do civil duty for 6 months as well, where you don't go to army, but do useful stuff here and there instead, but you can also get shit jobs like wiping elderly people asses too, and can get bad stigma in eyes of older people.

I'm all in for mandatory service time.

I mean toughens them up in a positive way, not make them bullies or assholes. Toughens them up in a way that they get up when they should get up, and not cry about little things. This is very important because in Finland we have pampering society, its good and bad thing, because it gives lots of safety nets, but it also encourages sloth and makes people kinda weaker.

What the fuck are you talking about? A lot of people become better versions of themselves when they join military service. They learn discipline, teamwork, leadership, mission focus, physical fitness and many other skills that can aid them in various areas of their lives in and out of the military. There are also usually other benefits that are offered such as bonus pay, housing allowances, travel assistance, higher education incentives and more.

Military service is not ideal for everyone, but assuming that it's just a waste of one's life is a bit silly and ignorant.
