It toughens kids up, it only lasts 6 months or a year at max (in Finland at least, which is also thinking of dropping it to like 3 months), they learn some dicipline, get in better shape, learn valuable life skills, earn little bit of money, and mature up. Its also, possible to do civil duty for 6 months as well, where you don't go to army, but do useful stuff here and there instead, but you can also get shit jobs like wiping elderly people asses too, and can get bad stigma in eyes of older people.
