You do it because you have to. (Poster was referring to an OP asking how people manage to work 9-5 for the rest of their lives. Will point out doesnt necessarily have to be 9-5, just the fact that youre working)

However unlike you, when I first started working I started feeling enthusiastic and positive. It took about a year or so until that all changed.

When you realize it's the rest of your life you soon feel very depressed, every day becomes the same and it makes me become very disconnected. I don't know if it's because of the repetitiveness of everyday but I've become distant, almost like I'm viewing my life from third person. I can understand why suicide rate is so high these days, just look around at people on your way to work in the morning and you'll soon realize we all are stuck in the repetitive, identical life cycles.

Maybe that's just me but I certainly agree with you OP. I guess you just get used to it after a while and you do it because you have to.

I feel similar views, like viewing the world from a third perspective or understanding why suicide rates are so high

Sometimes I just feel like winning the lottery, while it may not erase all your problems, is the only way to get out of this cycle

Tribes with no concept of money do the same things every day over and over.

This has only been a recent issue in western society due to the explosion of narcisism brought in by the free love movement and has only been ballooning since.

I've been commuting for a year now, large junks of the trip just pass by and I have no memory of them

Every day of the week is pretty boring. Going to work every day is a hassle.
I long for the days of being a kid.

I relish in finding a stable orbit and use that to help others. Sure, it'll fade in time which is why I use my day to day, however mundane, to use my finite time in a way that's enjoyable to me and to those whose paths I cross.

When people have time to be depressed about having to go work, it means life is pretty good. It means that they don't have more serious issues, such as an illness in the family, a personal disability, financial hardship, or any of the other things which bring us down.

depends on your job. that's exactly how I felt with the lowest of low tier jobs (delivering newspapers). seeing my whole life ahead of me doing nothing but that, there was no way I could let things stay that way.

now as a programmer, I literally do something brand new every single day. my code base grows without bound. there's no limit to how good my code can be or how well it can scale. new technologies emerge that make my skills even more effective than before, etc.etc.

Well, I have a good job and have food, shelter, water, friends, and whatever game I want to play. Sure there's a routine to it but I like routine personally. A relationship isn't required to be happy either. If you want change, just go out and meet people. There are events happening in every state for gamers. You may not like your job, but that doesn't have to define you.

This is arguably the "Great Lie" of the modern age.

Most people bust their humps because they feel like they need to in order to survive. Couples wind up sending both spouses to work because they feel like they need a double income to pay for their lifestyle. There is a perception that, no matter what you have now, it is not enough, and that you need to work harder to achieve more.

But realistically, most of the things we consider "necessities" today really aren't, and lots of people, even in lower-income tiers, would be astonished to find how much money they start to have available if they started cutting some of those things out of their life.

But our entire society is geared to marketing everything to us as "MUST OWN" because our economy is built on consumerism, and if people in general stopped buying stuff, the entire house of cards would collapse. It's why, no matter how often people complain about Christmas becoming too commercial, the bulk of people still rush out to try and get Black Friday deals or buy stuff for everyone they've ever met in their life. It's why candy companies basically rely on Halloween sales for massive profit. It's why pretty much every holiday we have, no matter how minor, is basically just becoming an excuse for sales.

What it claimed to be about, what it was originally about, what people interpreted it as, and how it was often implemented in practice are all different things.

Even people who were hippies during that era will freely admit that lots of people only ascribed to the ideology because it gave them an excuse to get high and fuck without repercussions (or to dodge societal expectations or responsibilities they didn't want to fulfill). And it absolutely evolved over time into the mentalities of the 1970s (the "me" decade) and 1980s (where "Greed is Good").

The hippies certainly didn't invent the concept of "individuality at the expense of society" (realistically most of modern Western/Eurocentric culture is rooted in it), but they definitely helped fuel its strong upsurge in the US over the last few decades.

Some people can actually fall asleep on a repetitive commute and their body/brain can drive safely there. It's crazy.

People may be depressed and think that thier going to work over and over is mundane and pointless but really they're just too lazy or blind to notice all the new and tiny variations that everyday brings.

I dont drive but I used to fall asleep on the bus all the time and wake up just in time for my stop. Pretty weird
