Is that a thing people are doing now?

Isn't that like.. Sexualizing your relationship with your kid?

Kinda rubs me the wrong way.

Women have been doing that forever. Desperate, single women that secretly want to bang the thing they gave birth to.

OK, so maybe not that last part, but women have been doing that for years now. Especially single women.

I've heard of parents doing that. I don't believe it's common. And it's a certain kind of parent. But I don't believe it's sexual in any way to them. But I have heard of it.

A date doesn't have to be sexualized. I don't think it's too common to use it otherwise but it does happen. My friend and I go on "study dates" but we are only friends. Though I don't think I'd use that term if it were one of my male friends. *shrug*

I guess for some people l, it can be weird based on genders, though I wouldn't mind either way. That being said, I guess it is also like how people set up play-dates for kids. Like toddlers or whatever is between infant and toddlers.

Lmao. Well I guess from the post her son was old enough to go to Home Depot with her and help her with a home improvement project. I'd bet he was at least 6-8 years old.

I would say a parent could jokingly use the word "date" with their kids until they are going through puberty. I'm pretty sure my friends have said things like that with their kids.

Things like "Got a date with my daughter at Disney (land) tonight so I can't play games" aren't uncommon around socal.

Either you guys have some repressed Oedipal complexes you need to work out on your own, or you've never actually socialized with people on anything but the most literal terms. She went on a "date" with her son in the same way you might "go to work" with one of your kids. Yea, they may take a tour around your office and hang out with you in the cafeteria, but no one is expecting him or her to file reports and attend meetings, and they didn't need to conduct a drug screening nor are they now on the company payroll. Having a "date" with your mom is the same as just you and her having a pleasant day/night out. Kinda like a "boys night" you might have with your dad, or a "girls day out" a mother might have with her daughter.

Jeez, the willingness some of you to feign outrage is starting to get insulting to your intelligence.

The word date is the English equivalent to the French word rendezvous, a word that means both a romantic engagement and an non-romantic engagement planned in advance. It's the reason people use the phrase "It's a date". As someone else stated, it's you implying sexual connotations. It's like hearing a parent telling a child to pull down thier pants while you are in a bathroom. The logical assumption is that it's a parent helping thier small child use the potty. If your first thought goes to sexual acts, it says much worse things about you than about anyone else involved.

the thing is you guys keep prefacing the word date with another word that changes the intent of the "date."

"play date" "mom date" those all change the meaning of the word "date" from the romantic sense.

just saying "i'm going on a date" is romantic. "i'm going on a date with my son/i was out on a date with my son" is weird contextually.

And you were told that the concept of a mother going on a "date" with thier son isn't anything sexual and just a different(but established) use of the word date. You're both trying to be too literal with the word "date" while also trying to act as if other meanings of the word don't exist.

In other words feigning outrage/ignorance. Use your brain for a moment. Which is more likely, that a mother is casually mentioning her plans for incest, or that she is playfully using the term "date" in the way she might refer to her son as "her little man" or a father might call thier son "man of the house" when he leaves for some kind of trip. Unless you honestly believe they both assume that the little boy would now be expected to pay bills and keep the mother romantically satisfied.

So again, Oedipal complex or lack of social skills?

Because momma's boy implies you are an immature child who still clings to thier mother for support/care rather than standing on your own two feet. That's unrelated to anything romantic.

or.. perhaps.. words have different general context in different areas?

i've literally never heard anyone say they were going on a date with their son where i grew up or anywhere i've ever lived actually. i've never been in an area where that's apparently a common and innocent phrase.

I don't think the word "date" to mean exactly that. Parents use this word as a playful word; as if their child was a grown up. And children love to be fawned over; they like being told that they're on their way to being grown up; ready to take on responsibility, protect and cherish mum and his sisters etc etc.

saying stuff like that is part of what creeps me out. like yeah, teach your daughter that she needs to be respected but saying that phrase is sexualizing your experience. (again sexualizing =/= having sex or incest)

Y'all are taking this way too serious. She figured it wasn't a real date. She was just asking if it was normally said like that.

But yeah it's normal I guess. I seen tv shows mention stuff like that. I am pretty sure I have heard it used like that before. Also I am sure the lady meant mom date and she probably assumed others would think the same.

But for me personally, I think it is weirder for family members to kiss on the lips then go on a date with each other.
