I'd heard of this happening, but I always thought it was just a joke and nobody would actually be that obtuse and stupid. But it's real. It actually happens. And it just happened to me! O_O

So I was ringing up a woman's stuff (candy bar, small bag of chips, and something else I forget) and the total came to $6.66. This is pretty much how it went:

Me: That'll be six-sixty-six.
Her: Oh! I'm not paying that.
Me: *laughs, thinking she was making a joke*
Her: *doesn't move, just stares at me*
Me: ...ma'am, the total is $6.66. It's just how much that costs.
Her: Well I'm not going to pay that amount. It's evil. Take a penny off. (Yes, she actually said it was "evil" XD)
Me: Ma'am, I'm not going to take a penny off. I can't change the price just because you don't happen to like the number.
Her: I'm not paying $6.66, so what do you want me to do about it?
Me: Well...you could just buy an extra candy bar?
Her: *grabs another candy bar* This is ridiculous. I can't believe I have to pay like 2 bucks more just because you won't take off a penny!

I decided not to suggest that I could always add a penny instead. :-P I didn't think she'd take that too well.

But seriously...I really thought this was just an urban myth. Surely nobody was actually that stupid, right? Nope. I was dead wrong. It's real. It really happens. People really are that fucking stupid.

I can't stand when people break hundreds for an item that costs less than five dollars. Fuck everyone who does that. Also, when anyone asks you to break up several hundred dollars into smaller change, THEY ARE SCAMMING YOU. That is an instant red flag. Why aren't you headed to the bank to get that done, hmmm? I believe it too. People really do complain about stupid shit like that. Someone bitched to me about something that was being rung up being a penny too expensive once and had to get my general manager to come out to tell her that we aren't changing the price.

I do not miss retail at all. Absolute worst job in the United States, and I hate people now more since working there.

Friend of mine worked in a supermarket.
One day he got called to the manager's office due to a customer complaint. Apparently some old lady got annoyed with his cheerful whistling as he was stocking the shelves. She spend upwards of 100 there each week so she felt that gave her the right to try and crush any joy he had performing his job.
Of course the manager basically told him to just ignore that bitter hag.

Person decided to buy a second not to have to pay 6.66.. So the total ended up being 13.34 (taxes being rounded up or something added 2 cents to 6.66x2)
Person paid with a $20 bill and got 6.66 back in change.

You draw more attention to it because the number means something to you. You're not really drawn to other sets of numbers because they are insignificant and you are less likely to remember them.
