It would have been better for him if he took the dog back to the owners and then told them what the dog did. Any other thoughts?

Fairly typical course of action when it comes to rural folk dealing with neighbor pets gone rogue.

Chickens are still livestock.
People get pissed when their livestock gets destroyed out of the blue by a stray domestic animal.

To farmers, a wandering neighbor's dog that preys on livestock is no better than a hungry coyote. And legally, the law is usually on their side in such cases. So bang bang...

My uncle had a dog that broke loose and killed a chicken. The dog ended up going to jail because animal control didn't have a big enough cage for him.

Drowning the dog is going overboard. A chickens life is worth more than a dogs, it gives you eggs/food or money by selling them, after awhile you can even eat the chicken.

While I support wouldn't shooting the dog, if he was in the process of killing something. That would be understandable, to protect your livelihood and such. But this dude beat and drown the dog. That is just anger and payback. That isn't justice.

The court also heard Findlay made personal threats to Ms Grealy after he was charged.

This is clearly a case of someone going way too far. Not only did he intentionally cause the dog to suffer, he actually struck out at the other family when he was charged by the authorities. At the very least he has some serious anger issues.

Both people involved are shit. The dog killer is worse though.

First of all, secure your dog! If you have a dog that kills livestock it's an obvious thing. Also, the dog owner's entitlement is silly: 'oh! you should have sent me a note!' 'oh! Dogs will be dogs!'.

Having said that, that psycho who killed the dog needs to be locked up, what a piece of shit.

I mean, dogs generally just kill chickens unless they're used to being around them and taught not to(and still even then). It's just in their nature.

This. Dogs that have killed livestock once will do it again and again, but putting down the dog should be done through proper channels, not vigilante-style.

that is messed up because the loss isn't the same on both sides

on one side you have a man who lost a chicken that didn't even have a name, and it was just property. he was gonna sell it or eat it. or sell or eat it's eggs.

on the other side, you have a family that lost their pet. a member of their family that they had emotional attachment to.

he went too far. I say kill him

I farm and have livestock, I don't hesitate to take out possums, coyotes, raccoons, bobcats, etc that threaten my animals. It's part of the territory, but I don't think I could bring myself to shoot a dog unless it was aggressive towards me or other people and has no collar or identification. I can replace a chicken or a turkey to spare a neighbor's pet.

Depends on how many chickens were brutally massacred which the article doesnt mention.

I believe chickens have a certain degree of intelligence to feel fear and pain.

Maybe the dog killed a lot to enrage the farmer to such a point. If it was just one chicken, I doubt anyone would kill a dog over one chicken.

step 1: Lock dog in the chicken shack, call owner, make him come pick up his dog and tell him he is cleaning the chicken blood from my shack. Tell him that next time the pound is receiving a phone call.

Step 2: If the dog does it again, repeat step # 1, tell the owner AGAIN that you will call the dog pound.

step 3: If the dog does it again, lock him up in the chicken shack again and call the pound. Bye bye dog.

If he'd shot the dog in defense of his property, the law probably would have been on his side. However, he beat and drowned this dog out of revenge, even pulled out the old 'eye for an eye' adage, and that's not okay. Plus he was threatening the dog's owner.

Also if the dog got in, that means the chicken coop was not secure. Any number of animals could have gotten in and done the same thing, so it kinda strikes me as his fault tbqh
