same thing i said in the lootbox topic going on: literally all these companies have to do to stop this is to define what exactly is in each lootbox you're purchasing instead of making it random. that would solve their problems entirely.

In Canada, the WCLC requires that lotteries state their odds and payouts - soooo... something something lootbox?

If it's not random it doesn't hit on the really profitable dopamine receptors.

i mean does the name "lootbox" only mean it has to be random? it just means you're purchasing a "box" with "loot" in it.

Yes. Otherwise, your just purchasing the item itself.

I'm just curious, would this mean in-game lootboxes with randomized loot that aren't purchased with real world money be considered gambling?

Also, does this mean trading card booster packs should be considered gambling as well? It's pretty much exactly the same concept.

Technically, it is. But I think the term over time has grown specifically to refer the random loot gacha style rewards system that its become today.

Sorta like "a thumb is a finger, but not all fingers are thumbs" kinda thing.

Surely there's a difference between getting a truely random selection where you don't know what you're going to get versus a random selection which you know includes something you want.

They could make boxes with a guaranteed item and some other random ones even.

The randomization is what makes it a lootbox, though. Lootboxes are a subset of microtransaction characterized by having random contents. Without randomness, they aren't lootboxes.
