Sure it sucks in areas with limited internet capabilities but generally if the ISPs are doing user unfriendly practices people will just move away from them.

Its called capitalism.

Yay for people who only have one choice for their internet service provider and it's either Comcast or ATT, both of which are guilty for whoring themselves out against net neutrality./

There are metropolitan areas where monopolies exist, you know. RCN only installs in some parts of Chicago, Comcast only installs in other parts.

I don't know if you have a full understanding of what net neutrality encompasses

Ummm, why is Google/Netflix monitored by the FTC but Comcast by the FCC?

Y'know that by removing FCC regulation they're making the internet MORE neutral?

Yeah that would imply Mindgeek doesnt have the money to pay off ISPs to keep their speeds high.

Which of course... is a joke. Because brazzers is unbelievably loaded.

Mindgeek annual revenue is 9.5 billion

And if there isnt, demand for less oppressive internet drives young upstart companies to expand itno these areas and take down the giants.

They arent true monopolies.

It's just fiber.

And Chicago is like one of the most competitive areas for internet, ATT and RCN and I think one other one...

Move as in move away from the area? Because that's kinda the choice in a lot of places. And, if you take John Oliver's word, the major companies run monopolies by agreeing to not invade each others' space

And, frankly, the thing should be a public utility anyway.

At least ATT has a point though, they own the physical "series of tubes" that the internet has to pass through.

Pretty much. Breaking the telecom oligopoly is not at all a realistic option for people that are dissatisfied with the service provided by the existing options. There's a reason Google Fiber is the only noteworthy exception to that trend seen in the last decade or two, and that's because it's ****ing Google and they can throw a billion dollars into a high-risk venture if they feel like it and nobody can stop them. De-regulating ISP's is a really, really bad idea.

Btw: ISPs already can throttle and control content... by switching from FCC to FTC oversight they'd actually have to report that they're doing it.

The logical conclusion of completely unregulated capitalism always ends with corruption and monopolies, until consumers have literally no choices, which at that point defeats the benefits of capitalism in the first place.

That's why you need balance. Too much government and too much capitalism can both be bad things. Granted, in this case, there should be a universal public option and, if somebody wants a different option, maybe have private companies for them.

The whole idea of "speak with your wallet" is that you can choose not to buy something.

But the idea of net neutrality is that something like the internet is considered a utility: a basic requirement for everybody to have, which most do not have the option to simply not have. You CAN'T speak with your wallet if you can't go without internet, which in the modern world becomes more and more a fact of life.

Well we could if there were a reasonable number of ISPs in most areas, but unfortunately lobbying, collusion and local monopolies have robbed us of choice and the massive barriers to entry of becoming a provider pretty much ensure that most people have few or no choices.

We don't have net neutrality in Australia. So far all we get are some websites like Netflix don't count towards your download quota depending on who your ISP is and what they offer.

Hope it works out for you guys.

but imo internet access should be treated like a utility and regulated by government to keep costs down and guarantee a minimum level of service.

Unfortunately that's not how capitalism works. There'll be laws involved meaning no choice for ISPs. And people often don't care/know enough to pick the user friendly options. Look at microsoft, the opposite of user friendly, and people still use or even buy it.

the anti-net neutrality people use double speak

case in point they lie their asses off

if they didn't want to regulate anything they wouldn't have even said anything
and everything they've done thus far has been proven to be lies
99% of all organic comments were FOR net neutrality
so why would comcast say they're for net neutrality and then try to regulate it?
they think we're stupid

virtually every single company google, microsoft is for net neutrality
it's the telecom companies that want to play with peoples speeds
it has nothing to do with physical wires not being able to handle internet speeds
they're crazy and americans are stupid
