Senate Republican leaders moved Tuesday to include a repeal of the Affordable Care Acts individual mandate in their tax bill, a major change of strategy as they try to accomplish two of their top domestic priorities in a single piece of legislation.

They also announced that the individual tax cuts in the plan would be made temporary, expiring at the end of 2025 to comply with Senate rules limiting the impact of legislation on the long-term deficit. A corporate tax cut, reducing the rate from 35 to 20 percent, would be left permanent.

The changes introduce volatile variables into what was already a challenging political enterprise for Republicans. And its unclear whether they will help or hurt the bills chances.

Repealing the mandate, which compels most Americans to buy health insurance or pay a fine, would free up more than $300 billion in government funding over the next decade that Republicans could use to finance their proposed tax cuts, but it would result in 13 million fewer people having health insurance, according to projections from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

The CBO has also projected that repealing the individual mandate would drive up insurance premiums for many Americans by roughly 10 percent.

tl;dr: changes are being made to fuck regular americans even harder in the senate variation of the bill.

And no, this was not 'always the plan'.

That can't possibly count as reconciliation still, can it?

the only reason the individual mandate is legal is because it is considered a tax

So basically they're fully aware this bill will never pass and are just stuffing in as many campaign promises as they can so they can blame Democrats for "blocking" them when it inevitably fails to get enough Republicans on board?

my understanding is that it is less about trying to repeal Obamacare and more about trying to find money in the budget that GOP senators can all rally around

it is a short list of things they can all agree on

what's bizarre is that it removes personal deductions permanently while cutting rates temporarily

it's a uniquely insulting bill to the taxpayer

Then, the senate shouldn't really be invovled until the house passes it and hands the bill over.
The bigger reason the government is such a mess is because the halves of congress insist on trying to do things simultaneously.

They're doing it to expedite the process.

specifically because if they can't do it by the alabama senate election they won't be able to do it at all

Which, of course, just makes it all take longer.

I'm not understanding.

When you've got a house bill and a senate bill at the same time, it becomes difficult to figure out what's really going on.

By design.

Republicans dicking around with ACA will only serve to accomplish its end-goal of crashing the private insurance system even sooner.

Fair, next. Let the people feel the full burden of the taxes levied on them. There should be no more deductions of any kind.
