When the US didn't make the World Cup it was pretty big news for a while. Winter olympics are debateable though. There isnt a single individual olympic sport competition the world cares about more than the world cup(and indeed, being an amatuer tournament, most people dont care about olympic soccer) as far as individual sports though the world cup is far and away the biggest individial sporting competition.
