First time missing the biggest event in the world in 60 years.

Complete chaos in the country. Pretty much nothing compares to the sadness in that country right now. ( If you think this is an exaggeration you don't realize how big soccer is in Italy)

Not really true anymore. When the US didn't make the World Cup it was pretty big news for a while. Obviously soccer is not even a fraction here as it is in the rest of the world, but it's a lot more popular than it used to be.

Daaaang, that's crazy. I felt the pain when U.S. didn't make it in, but it definitely doesn't compare to Italy's history of the sport.

Going to be an interesting World Cup, to say the least.

Not in soccer I think. At Olympics it is only for players under 23 and each team can have three older players, but only three. So it is not a "full competition" for me.

the olympics are bigger than the world cup, but its not a fair comparison because the sheer number of sports and nations representing. Winter olympics are debateable though. There isnt a single individual olympic sport competition the world cares about more than the world cup(and indeed, being an amatuer tournament, most people dont care about olympic soccer)

as far as individual sports though the world cup is far and away the biggest individial sporting competition. I dont even know if the super bowl comes close.

Incorrect. The 3.2 billion viewers is the amount that is recorded for in-home television viewing. It had a cumulative viewership on all channels of over 20 billion. This was actually DOWN. In 2006 the World Cup had a cumulative viewership of over 26 billion. The Olympics total cumulative viewership over every single sport and including the opening ceremonies(which is almost a 3rd of the viewership) is just over 3 billion.

The simple fact is that the majority of the world cares little about the Olympics and Olympic Athletes. People don't know and don't care who the vast majority of the athletes are. The only times viewers tune in is they catch little snippets when their own athletes are competing. In co ntrast, in 95% of the world, soccer players are gods. Soccer is not a sport, it is the most important thing in the country - it is bigger than religion, politics and pretty much anything else. The majority of the world lives, breathes and sleeps soccer and the World Cup is the pinnacle of Soccer.

Keep in mind that the Olympic Revenue and ratings numbers are despite the fact that they have almost every single country on earth participating in the Olympics. The World Cup only has 32 countries in the tournament and still does better numbers.

As I said, it's not close. The World Cup is bigger.

Because somehow Fifa is more corrupt than the IOC? Maybe you should watch the documentary "Icarus" on Netflix to see the extent of IOC corruption.

Anyhow, it doesn't matter. The World Cup is far more popular. I dare you to ask any non-North American what is bigger to them - the Olympics or the World Cup and I guarantee you a minimum of 80 out of a 100 will say The World Cup.

Yeah I don't know how it would make sense to show a cumulative viewership of 20 billion.

Every person in the world would have had to watch it nearly three times for that to make sense. What a weird statistic.

Right? I get that there are multiple matches and all, but it is a poor statistic to use for comparison's sake. Definitely looks like stat-padding, and it's noted that they didn't use the same stat for the 2014 World Cup report I liked to.
