i agree that taking away the assistance they need isn't the answer, but at the same time we need some way to encourage people to become self sufficient.

its also fucked how we completely strip away any and all benefits the second someone becomes employed. "oh, your health insurance at your hourly rate job doesn't kick in for 6 months? you better hope you and your family stay healthy until then because your Medicaid is gone"

It puts people in tough situations that might simply just perpetuate their poverty.

If you gave assistance and gave people time to get their life together, my guess is they'd end up better off.

What? Im a liberal, but whats wrong with it? Its actually beneficial to ones self esteem and psyche to be earning what youre getting. Assuming the person is physically able to.

people will be forced to work shitty jobs in order to maintain welfare, so many arent able to take the time to learn skills or get an education or w/e

I mean, if you're saying that is what public assistance without work requirements is, then yes.

the issue with work requirements is they are based on the false assumption that people will stop working in order to get them (public assistance benefits)

but the vast majority of households on public assistance already work, and those that don't have a variety of reasons for not doing so (school, caretaking an elderly family member, disability)

requiring someone to work for public assistance doesn't magically make them employable if they aren't one of the majority that are already working, basically
