I have a PS4 and I kinda dont want to go back to play games on old consoles. Can I just read the plots on Wikipedia and play the latest game?

MGS V pretty much has no relation to the rest of the series, so all you have to do is read up on Ground Zeroes and Peace Walker to know the full story.

Plus MGS V barely has any story at all so you won't be confused or lost at any point.

If you have a PS3, do the legacy collection.

If not, either start with MGS1 or MGS3.

MGS1, then 2, then 3, then Peace Walker, then 4.

If you really like the series, MGS3 has playable ports of MG1 and MG2, which were old Japanese computer games.

The first is completely broken, but the second is really good and worth a playthrough.

Their stories do matter, but you can start at MGS and you'll learn all the important information well enough. MGS1 is really the best starting point.

you start at the beginning or dont start at all. reading the wiki will not do this series justice FAR more than any other series. half the amazing shit in them are from gameplay sequences.

Well the old games are the only ones that are any good, but go crazy.

If you do, play in release order. That's the way they are meant to be played

don't you fucking dare read the plots of the game . you'll just ruin experiencing the series. You buy the legacy collection and play ALL OF THEM in release order, then pick up Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain on ps4

I really really enjoyed 5. It was a lot different than any of the others that I had played (I didn't play GZ or PW though, so don't know how those compare). The story was kind of weak compared to other MGS games, but compared to games in general it still featured very strong writing.

you can play literally all of them on ps3 i'm pretty sure. if it's too traumatising to go back to that far than don't bother. You don't even need to read story summaries of the older games to enjoy mgs 5, it was designed to be pretty newcomer friendly. all you'd be doing there is soiling a potential playthrough of them in the future.
just play GZ/The Phantom Pain on PS4 first, and if you're really intrigued by the story and characters that you think a trip back to the harrowing ps2/ps3 era is worth it, then go back to the older games.

You can play all of them but Portable Ops on PS3. But you can just download an Emu and ask someone with a PSP to dump you a copy

If you wanna get into the series, start with MGS1. I personally wouldn't recommend starting with Metal Gear 1, the original, because imo, it doesn't hold up nearly as well as the others and might put you off from the series, whereas MGS1 is fantastic. I know I and a lot of people started with MGS1 anyway. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is great though.

If you just wanna play MGSV, you can probably ignore the whole series and just play V. It isn't too story intensive or really relevant in the grand scheme of things anyway.

The Legacy Collection on PS3 comes with pretty much all the important games in the series. It doesn't come with MGSV though.

MG1
MG2
MGS1
MGS2
MGS3
MGS4
Peace Walker
Rising
MGSV

The only ones you can reasonably skip are MG1 and 2, and this is entirely because MGS1 has a plot summary that you can choose from the main menu. And the plot was never all that involved anyway.

And you can skip Rising if you just really want to but it rules so
