We opened up the game today to see RONOVE. Already off to a great start!

I told her the theory I had the first time reading this, that Ronoves appearance here is actually just Genji standing up after getting brushed by a bullet.

A: This is a weird hierarchy. She serves Kinzo, who is in love with Beatrice, who was Virgilias student and thus her inferior

A: What the heck is this about?
K: its part of the magical side of the story, if you want to entertain the idea. I personally dont worry about the literal meaning too much, but youre free to do so as much as you want. The two sides of the story all make up the whole Umineko coin, so its worth considering.

Gaap appears
A: *points at the screen in silence for a moment*
A: I was NOT imagining that!
A: Also I like how she cant decide if she wants to be sexy maid or dressage habit
(Arria likes both these things, so I think she likes Gaap's fashion sense lol)

K: Around this time, there were a lot of theories regarding who or what Gaap represented
A: So thinking from the fantasy perspective, it feels like this. Kinzo has taken center stage instead of Beatrice. So instead of Beatrice summoning demons and Kinzo dancing on her puppet strings, we get Kinzo playing with Beatrice as a puppet.

A: This music makes me think that she is representing Beatrice in some way
K: This is Happy Maria, but I dont remember her being present any time the song plays

K: *cackle* I think that was one theory people had around this time.

We look up Gaap according to the Ars Goetia. In that, Gaap is said to be able to transfer familiars out of the command of their masters (in addition to the teleporting stuff weve seen)
A: That part is interesting. Not that I think Virgilia and Ronove are familiars, but maybe Gaap is somehow responsible for how they can be Beatrices servants in this timeline, but Kinzos in this one.

The screen changed and Gaaps face was right where Beatrices was. The change was subtle
A: Yeah, their faces were very similar right there!
Now Gaap talks to Beatrice and says something about how she looks younger, etc.
A: Oh yeah, now I KNOW shes talking to a sock puppet! *she imitates a girl talking to a sock puppet and saying typical valley-girl stuff*

Gaap looks at Battler
A: My head right now: *moved her hand like a sock puppet moving its head*
A: Im not sure how you make a sock puppet look like it has an obscene smile, though

Ange sums up closed circles and how it goes against etiquette of mystery novels to keep introducing characters
A: In other words, this is Beatrices way of saying fuck you to the mystery genre.

She thinks that Gaaps voice is familiar. I had to look up who voiced her. Yuki Kaida. I was familiar with a few of her roles, but Arria wasnt. I dunno. She has a nice voice, though!
(As we were going through her list of roles, Arria sorta forgot why we were looking her up in the first place and then got excited when she saw that she was in Umineko lol.)

So yeah, we get to the scene where Maria is gonna torture Rosa. I warn Arria that Maria might have a fucked up face coming up. She likes me to warn her about things like that.

Rosa is described as feeling a pain like her chest being ripped open, all while Sakutaro is looked down on her
A: I hope this is sarcasm.

A: You know what else this reminds me of? Sucker Punch.
K: I havent seen it.
A: It has a fantastic bullshit answer, another meta later answer, and the real answer.

Rosa denying Sakutaro adds more hints that hes not unique. Theres a special effect of black holes appearing around his neck

We had a pretty good discussion about what we feel this scene really is.
A: As a kid, did you ever get mad at your parents for something and just wallow in your room for a while?
K: I think thats what this scene is. This might be happening five minutes after Sakutaro got ripped up. I think this is all in Marias head
A: That would explain a lot. And like when Rosa was with that man, it didnt mention them having sex. Maria wouldnt know about that. She probably imagines them just playing together like kids do. And then when she killed her mom here, she might think that humans have cotton inside if she doesnt know otherwise
K: True. And besides, havent you ever fantasized about killing someone who hurt you? (I bring up a specific example)
A: Oh God yes.
K: I think Maria is going through that. Shes just crying in her room, fantasizing about killing Rosa.

We talked a bit about Gaap and Goldsmith, talking about what they might represent. She didnt realize while looking at their profiles that she was looking at Goldsmith and not Kinzo so she took a moment to read that.

Back on the island, the adults in prison found out the phone actually works! Not that it does much since the island is cut off, so they cant contact police.

Seeing Nanjo reminded me of the Name of the Year contest being held featuring Dr. Narwhals Mating. I had to point that out to Arria.

K: I cant think of instance where it has. Or any reason why it would. Of course, the game is still allowed to do things such as showing Natsuhi talking to Kinzo when the conversation is actually happening in her head. But for the sake of murders, I dont think the clock has ever lied.

Krauss. because the other siblings cornered him and said we know what youre doing and now the only way out is murder. So maybe hes calling the guesthouse to make sure everyone is there so he can continue being Freddy Hatchetman. He also knows where Gohda is now! Natsuhi could have been an accident or killed in cross-fire. Or maybe she was in on it, she shot someone, they fought back, in the struggle she died. There are three WinChiesters (pronounced like that intentionally). Krauss, Natsuhi, and Kinzo-Beatrice? Or one of the servants. Genji. Lets go with Genji. He seems like a likely one.

A: Im trying to remember the order they were summoned. Chiesters, Ronove, Virgilia, and then Gaap?
K: Right
A: The Chiesters were there from the start. They shot Genji, who became Ronove. Then Kumasawa and Gohda are Virgilia and Gaap. Hey, maybe its these two are in on it with Krauss! Maybe Gohda was told he could get promoted to butler if he joined in on the fun! Genjis getting old, someone will need to replace him.
K: I think Gohda is happy being a chef.
A: It might be like the guy in Downton Abbey who just wants a fucking promotion. Like, Gohda enjoys being a chef, sure, but he would probably be happy with being promoted. Or hell, maybe he really wants that fucking bird on his clothes.
A: Again, if Kumasawa and Gohda are in on it, they would be hiding the truth just like theyre doing now. They would tell the kids shit like Beatrice appeared and killed everyone with magic! We didnt see what they told the kids exactly, but they probably didnt tell them that Krauss and them killed their parents.

K: I think its safe to assume Battler is with Jessica, so he hears what shes saying, but not what Krauss is saying.

A: This conversation feels like its actually Battler and Jessica sitting up in the guesthouse mocking how they actually talk. Like oh Kyrie is smart and wants to be hip with the kids! Krauss is talking about money again! Nanjo is calm and obsessed with chess! Like, its not really these people talking, but the cousins imagining a conversation between them. You know what I mean? The dialogue is so stereotypical to each of them.

We arrive at Kanon and Shannons scene where they break the fourth wall and Im SUPER excited to see how Arria responds to this.

So the scene was apparently Sayo talking to herself, wishing that there was a way to be happy. She described the Golden Land and how its a world of null. Its not a sad world, but its not inherently happy either. You have to make your own happiness. Hence why Shannon hopes to bring George there. I also noticed a line where Kanon said that he hoped the Golden Land was something like where they gave you magic medicine and then everything would be better. Maybe thats his way of describing gender reassignment surgery/hormone therapy/whatever else he needs to be complete.

K: Anything you have to say about their conversation?
A: Its a bunch of horseshit? I mean, from the magical side its relevant. Of course, its also creepy that they know what happened in previous gameboards. From a realistic perspective, maybe Nanjo and Kyrie and talking to Krauss in one corner, and then Shannon and Kanon are in another corner plotting to overthrow them? K: I looked it up, and Rebun Island is pretty far to the north. Maybe Beatrice wanted to use an address that was far away geographically so it would take a while for the letter to be delivered. He mentions Rokkenjimas old name of Akujikishima. I didnt know what kanji were used in the name, but I took a stab before looking them up
K: Well, aku is evil. Ji can be various evil things. Ki can be a lot of different kanji, including ogre.
A: So basically this is Evil Demon Ogre island? Or oh what was it called? The Island of No-Good Rotten Old Wicked Things? (Reference to Holes where the main character described his father as No-Good Pig-stealing, etc.)
